Re: Swing Efficiency Comparison: Bubka, Tradenkov, Lavillenie

The pole does not apply a centripetal force to the vaulter. In order to do that, the pole would have to apply a force toward the COM of the vaulter as the vaulter rotates. For non-circular orbits or trajectories, only the component of force directed orthogonally to the path (toward the center of the...

Re: GRV: Lavillenie - From Stall Swing to World Record

Kirk, I'm totally content to wait and read the scientific articles on it. John Gormley, if you're planning on writing any article(s) after you gather the necessary scientific information, let me know. I'll help out if I can, even if I only have a measly B.S. in Movement Science. Remember that in the...

Re: Video Review: Vault analysis and post season advice

Hello Username, You definitely have some time to improve some technical parts of your vault over the summer. But first thing is first: Get away from the vault for at least 2-3 weeks and go to the beach, relax, and just do some basic fitness things or sports. You need this time to mentally unwind, an...

Re: Swing Efficiency Comparison: Bubka, Tradenkov, Lavillenie

I can't keep up with all of this discussion. It's a couple pages a day! When you guys come to a solid conclusion about what Lavillenie is doing and why, I'll check back (maybe in a month or two). Then I will quickly STEAL the work you're doing on researching this, and apply it to what I already know...

Re: GRV: Lavillenie - From Stall Swing to World Record

I would agree that proper training can mitigate the technical component, but proper training will not change the stretch reflex of the hip flexor muscles. That being said, I agree with Tim that you can be successful both ways. I just do not train my athletes to have a double legged swing, because es...

Re: Swing Efficiency Comparison: Bubka, Tradenkov, Lavillenie

The goal is not to compress the pole. The goal is to move the pole the vertical.

Otherwise the higher gravity is, the better. And that just makes no sense. In your theoretical equations, vaulting on the moon would yield lower jumps than vaulting on earth.

Re: Hips up?!

You're going to have a very hard time learning to swing better on the pole until you are comfortable jumping further out. From that video, the pole is bending before your take off foot even hits the ground. This is very undesirable. You will jump very high when your take off is able to move out. Thi...

Re: Straight Pole Help Please

Hey Shane, Check out how Bubka looks when he does stiff pole drills: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgYQkQNwSPI What is his bottom arm doing? Right before he leaves the ground, there is a good amount of space between his bottom hand and his chest. This is desirable and allows you to jump up through...

Re: GRV: Lavillenie - From Stall Swing to World Record

I "blamed" myself, my lack of a coach, and time. And as much as you focus on the 'free take off' aspect, that still leaves the double leg, which I also experimented with and left behind. Will The exact same advice goes for the double leg swing as it does for the free take off. Countless r...

Re: GRV: Lavillenie - From Stall Swing to World Record

Probably early in 84 I tried both the "free" take off and double leg swing, and gave up on both as I thought I had a chance to take Mike Shafe's 16' 1 3/4" MO state record as I had cleared 15' 6" by a good foot/foot and a half at Attig's 83 summer camp at Raytown South. For inte...
