Re: Video review - two young vaulters

Thanks. We've been trying to emphasize the high plant. It is a work in progress with everyone. The biggest thing I've noticed is the bottom hand being in front of the face. They're getting better, but it is day to day. Vaulter #1 also draws her top hand behind her right before she flips the pole. I ...

Video review - two young vaulters

These girls are part-time vaulters. They were clearing between 6' and 7' their first week of the season last year. This is where they're at now. I have some ideas of what they're doing wrong, but I wouldn't mind hearing what others see right off the bat. TIA Vaulter 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

Best progression of gymnastics exercises?

Your opinion - what is your "must have" core grouping of gymnastics exercises for vaulters? Let's say you only had one hour per week in a facility that had high bar, trapeze, rings, etc.

What would you use and what would you do in that hour?

Re: Teaching swing without gymnastics equipment

Thanks. That is what I was looking for. I've called several gymnastics places only to be ignored. It is insane. We're trying to give them money, but apparently they don't want it.

I'll find one eventually.

Re: Regarding taking off right before pole reaches back of box

Thanks. I've had and been using BTB materials for years. I just like to keep learning. I originally came from a distance background and coaches who have been around for a while say "it's not about the workouts" meaning we can give you all our material in a book, but unless you're applying ...

Re: Regarding taking off right before pole reaches back of box

Thanks. Familiar with "free" takeoff. Hear lots of controversy about whether to teach it or not. We haven't really. My vaulters are all newbies. I was just wondering how that would come about. We do a lot of approach and plant work....probably to the point of boredom for some of them. They...

Regarding taking off right before pole reaches back of box

How do you effectively teach this? A lot of my vaulters don't feel comfortable leaving the ground until there is what they perceive to be a slight loading of the pole. I realize this kills some velocity. So what did you do to get over that and how can they become more comfortable with it? We emphasi...

Teaching swing without gymnastics equipment

How can I work on the swing phase without gymnastic equipment? Basically pole and pit only. I've been having them go from short approaches (4 and 6 step) while driving into the pit and staying long as close to vertical as possible before whipping through with the trail leg and trying to cover the po...

Re: How to fix crazy approach run and grip issues?

And for six step "guesstimates".....how do you personally come up with them?

I have seen good vault programs all do it differently - some lunge step it out backwards, some run back, some use the mid-chart, and so on and so forth.

Re: How to fix crazy approach run and grip issues?

I'll film and get back to you. Moving her in might help initially. And, yes, she is doing it as a safety mechanism. As far as the hand goes, it appears she is doing it right upon contact. Her plant is actually pretty high sometimes (straight overhead) and she will slide her hands down as she goes th...

Pole progression

What is the best way to move up poles? I have a girl gripping the top of a 11' 130. She can go into the pit safely and stay behind the pole from 6 steps. She isn't deep deep, but she is in. I've always thought you go up 10lbs (11' 140) and once they can repeat the same pit depth, go up to the 11'6&q...
