Re: pole transitions (grip)

Why isn't there a published length/flex chart for relative stiffness? Really simple answer to that one. There is no industry standard AND if the current method (deflection) does not accurately reflect the differences in the construction of the poles. While there are a lot of similarities, there are...

Re: pole transitions (grip)

Thanks for interpreting my somewhat overly detailed explanation Kirk.

Yes I agree with your recommendation. While raising grip a little (about an inch) is pretty typical, not moving it at all eliminates that additional bit of change from the equation.

Re: pole transitions (grip)

I think what confuses me about what PVjunkie wrote is what he mentioned about changes in flex not impacting grip height. Grip and stiffness (flex) are not directly linked. You can use two different poles and grip them in the same location or you can grip a single pole in multiple locations. Just be...

Re: pole transitions (grip)

The way you have this worded is confusing but I will take a shot at it. A change in flex has no impact on grip height and a change in grip height has no impact on flex. As you raise or lower your grip the stiffness at that grip height is different but the flex of the pole (test results that determin...

Re: new pole

What brand is the 14 footer? Assuming they are the same brand, a 14/165 is RELATIVELY equal in stiffness to a 14'6"(7)/155 at the same grip height. So essentially, without moving your grip, the 14'6"(7) pole is about 15 pounds stiffer. Can you successfully use that pole from a longer run? ...

Re: interpretation of rule change

Illinois did a terrible job with their interp. They used the USATF rule that has additional wording to determine what to do. Its bad enough that the rules get messed up on a regular basis but to intentionally use part of the other rule, that doesn't exist in the rule your interpreting, will just cre...

Re: Let's talk about box collars!

To my knowledge the USTFCCCA has not pushed the NCAA for an answer or has not shared the info if they have. As I explained in an earlier post, the email from them was a result of them sitting in on an ASTM conference call. It was not the result of communication with the NCAA. Its disappointing that ...

Re: Let's talk about box collars!

Independent standards are indeed a way for entities to improve quality, safety and confidence within their products or in this case the products of their members and deflect some of the liability. The NCAA does not manufacture products so by incorporating standards into their rules it allows them to...

Re: Let's talk about box collars!

I recently joined ASTM and became a voting member. I have now learned that this is one of the worst regulated organization and am really baffled as to why the NCAA would ever use them. I needed to show no proof that I knew anything about the equipment or pole vaulting. I also receive emails asking ...

Re: Let's talk about box collars!

I was there in person and yes I re-read the minutes. If I recall someone said that meeting set an attendance record. Was that the meeting you attended via conference call? We also met in Indy recently and a lot of opinions about this topic were shared then as well. Will you make it to Jacksonville i...

Re: Let's talk about box collars!

Not necessarily arguing that this is the right thing to do. Just I think if there is a rule in place there needs to be a better way to regulate and enforce it. Amen. They rushed to implement the rule and it's going to be a cluster**** There will not be a collar from Gill (that was not a prototype) ...

Re: Let's talk about box collars!

Enough BS about what is a fact -- look in the meeting minutes from ASTM F08.67 from November 15, 2012 - there were negative votes because these members thought it "mandated the use of winged design" until it was clarified that "If the box collar has box collar wings" - this word...
