Re: "Pole Chart" help

... Does this mean these poles are equivalent if you simple move your grip from where you were holding on the 12' pole to the same spot on the longer poles? Example - You are holding at 11'6" on the 12' foot pole so to be equivalent you would hold at 11'6" on the 13' pole. Yes, this. Hold...

Re: D-1 Outdoor best PV height histogram, by sex

... In addition to the men's spike at 5.20m, I noticed a spike for women's at ~4.20m too. Kirk I think the spikeyness is mostly an artifact of sorts due to commom progression intervals, as it is particularly noticable in the "average" section of the womens histogram. Here is the unsmoothe...

Re: D-1 Outdoor best PV height histogram, by sex

... Do you think it would work better as a summed graph? I think it's a little weird where the graph dips down around 17' or so and then spikes up again. Clearly anyone who has jumped 17'6 has the capability to jump 17', and so I think that if a data point counted for its own height as well as ever...

D-1 Outdoor best PV height histogram, by sex

[Edited to add: I did redid with whole country (not just east regional) and I did change the permissions so that everyone should be able to see. So the link below is to the new copy. Let me know if you have trouble accessing.] I think you might find this interesting. From the TFRRS website I copied ...

Re: Change jump order near end of competition?

1. At each height, it gives the " passing advantage " to the current leader of the meet, rather than the higher-seeded vaulters; and ... Well, not really. If you consider a pass as equal to a make, then wouldn't a passer be considered ahead of someone who cleared the last height on their ...

Re: Change jump order near end of competition?

I don't see why the leader's clearance is meaningless. If the higher-seeded vaulter passes at this height, then fails 3 times at a higher height, the leader's clearance is the winning clearance! It only makes a difference to the mark assigned to the win. If the higher seed passes and then goes XXX ...

Re: Change jump order near end of competition?

Well, the psychological aspect of jump order can cut both ways, but in any event, besides being unavoidable (someone has to go first), it is a much smaller issue of fairness compared to the one I think we should be focused on. And so I'd rather a solution that solves the big thing in a simple, easy-...

Re: Change jump order near end of competition?

I think this is a good alternative to explore. But I'm not so sure it would be simpler (or fairer). Okay, lets keep exploring this alternative then. There has got be a simple solution that eliminates the advantage (or, if anyone has the advantage, we at least give it to the person leading in the co...

Re: Change jump order near end of competition?

If the rule book authors do decide to allow reseeding during a continuous competition, how many times? Do we want to reseed for every height after whatever point the reseeding is allowed to start? Once again, speaking as an official, you don't really want to give us any more opportunities for mista...

Change jump order near end of competition?

Unlike other events in T&F, the PV and high jump seem to keep the same jump order throughout the competition. And the initial jump order is based on "worse to best" order of their best vault in a prior meet sometime in the past (sometimes, a long time ago). Other events use the initial...

Let's talk about box shape!

One of the problems with designing an effective and inexpensive box collar to minimize injury potential is that it has to deal with a "defect" inherent in the shape of the box itself: the sharp angles along sides and back top margins of the box. Those sharp angles focus the energy on any b...

Re: CA State, Rock 16-2, Barr DQ'd for swearing

I am completely offended by profanity. However, I am also a hardcore individualist. ... Personally, I'm not offended by hearing profanity (spontaneously uttered, directed to no one), but I know that some other people may be, and don't think my sensibilities should be the standard. And I also don't ...
