Re: Pole Vault Practice 1974 Video

One other possible note of interest. That jump of Mike was at UCLA and the pit and standards at that time were one of a kind. I was working for Ampro Corp. i.e. PortaPit/CataPole at that time and the president of the company refused to make 21'6" wide pits with the cut outs for the standards. H...

Re: Should college vaulters be required to wear helmets?

What data has been collected that would show that the catastrophic accidents that have happened to vaulters would have turned out better if the vaulter had been wearing a helmet. I am neutral on this subject, I don't have my vaulters wear a helmet but if one wants to I would certainly let them. My c...

Re: Width of Raised Runway? Is 24" enough?

Tom Years ago I made a runway that was 24" wide by ripping 4' sheets in half, as you asked about. We used if for years under the west grandstand at Hayward field when I coached at Oregon. It was the runway we used for the beginner group at our symposium last year. It seems too narrow but jumpin...

Re: 20/20 drill

Well said, of course if the author gives kudos it must be correct, just wanted to also state in case mjb has not read B2B, the 20/20 drill is a pole run drill so a proper pole carry is also a must. For right handers their top/right hand is on or near the right hip, the left/bottom arm should have th...

Re: Men 60-69 from Nationals - A Big Congrats to master!!

I would also like to congratulate John. I have been watching him jump all summer and he is really vaulting at a high level, I believe he has been consistently clearing 13' at every meet and practice for the last couple of months so I think even bigger jumps will be in his future. I think one of the ...

Re: History of the tap?

I don't know much about how tapping started in the US but one small piece of the story that I know goes like this. In the early 1980's I coached at Montana State University and one of my vaultes moved on after graduation to coach at University of Montana and while he was coaching there he participat...

Re: Don Gray, coach and masters vaulter passes away

I would like to second Rick's thoughts. I too will miss my very good friend, Don Gray. I just talked to him a couple of weeks ago and he told me he was doing fine, not sure if he was just being stoic or if he did not know how sick he was. He had fought a courageous battle with cancer the last few ye...

thanks, very weird thing to do but better than quitting. Actually Bubba is correct and the goofy footed decathlete was Bruce Jenner. Dan O'brien was a conventional technician in the vault.
