Re: Help with run/take off

I heard a story once about Petrov and a group of elite vaulters who had come to train with him. He took them to the track and had them do simple running drills with a pole to the point where they started to complain, either about the difficulty, the relevance, or the monotony... maybe all three. He ...

Re: Video review-all suggestions welcome!

If taking off under is a psychological block, get a smaller pole or even just grip down. Be pathological about being where you are supposed to be when taking off without having to worry about not making it in. Inch your grip back up, or try starting to use the normal pole. Several hundred repetition...

Re: new to coaching pole vault

Let basically anyone try it out for a while. Play in the sand... get them swinging over a bungee at the height of their own body within the first few practices. BtB drills are real winners. And use common sense regarding other things, like running. Avoid making lifting a priority... Save it for a ra...

Re: Any critiques would be great

Yes, I thought about putting it that way... But the take-off is the end of the plant, as it were, and when the plant begins, the body's center of gravity begins to shift upward. The pole begins to move upward as well. It is usually the weakest part of any elite vaulter's jump... I'm going to state a...

Re: Any critiques would be great

The plant is late. That contributes to many of the problems noted, and if not contributing, it is a function of them. The plant is the critical moment... when energy goes from horizontal to vertical. Try getting on a lighter pole, same grip, focus on planting on time (which will feel EARLY) and taki...

Re: Italian clubs?

Okay so I am realizing that Formia is a short ride away... Does anyone have the scoop on the World PV Center? Is Petrov still there, do they let recreational athletes use facilities at all, etc.?

Italian clubs?

No not the sandwich. I'm wondering if anyone has any leads on clubs in Italy or any kind of opportunity to jump in or near Rome. I'm heading there soon for some graduate studies.

Re: Strength Metrics

For what it's worth, I heard once (and I can't remember from where but remember it being rather authoritative) that someone who can snatch his own body weight has enough strength for a 6m jump. I'd say your athlete is doing great in this department. Vertical, speed, and coordination/technical skills.

Re: Prevent "Rowing"

Two different extremes in drilling might be helpful... Stiff poles (completely), and soft poles (crushable). Try going back and forth between them with 3-4 step runs, full jumps. Make sure he is focused exclusively on moving the hands upwards and nothing else. Lower the grip for these drills, have h...
