Re: Hooker has a close call in England

ADTF apparently took his post down, and asked me to remove my quote of it. So I have. However, so that my reply has context, I will note that in the post he asked others not to email the event hosts, stated that only US HS and NCAA have rules regarding the size of the pit, advised me (after examinin...

Re: Hooker has a close call in England

If anyone else wants to email the organizers with an objection to the conditions, I was only able to find a general email on the meets "Contact us" page of info@greatrun.org and nicola.hedley@nova-international.com. I sent an email (pasted below) to those addresses, and also CC'd it to a n...

Re: Hooker has a close call in England

Nice: no padding at all around the base of the standards. (And a metal fence about 5 ft off the pit.) Looks like his right foot/leg hit the pad, and the left foot/leg landed in the hole where the base padding should have been. At least he landed feet first. I'm not sure hanging onto the pole would h...

Re: Syracuse to cut the pole vault?

I think schools like Cuse and others should try and have coaches run club programs to help make money for the schools and track programs. It wouldn't come anywhere near football money, but it would justify the program and provide a service for nearby communities. NCAA rules make that challenging to...

Re: Rule changes for 2011

Indeed, the wording of the Wisc rule, if strictly parsed, would suggest *each* athlete gets 2 mins x the number entering, as it doesn't say they share that time (e.g., if two, each gets 4 mins; if 3, each gets 6). That don't make sense, and I'm sure it's not what they intended. Can we all agree that...

Re: Rule changes for 2011

IMO, when more than one vaulter is warming up, giving each their own exclusive 2 min slot would unnecessarily prolong things. Much more economical to combine them all into one shared time block. The walk-back and reset time between runs for one vaulter is longer than another vaulter would take using...

"Sports facility-destroying storm turns tragic"

The money quote: "A storm that was merely ravaging the local HS sports facility took a tragic turn for the worse when it upended the pole vault pit. Survivors flocked to the Pole Vault Power website seeking consolation for their loss." :D

Re: Rule changes for 2011

I think we've all seen examples where a vaulter sits out for over an hour (getting cold or hot or stiff), and on their one warmup attempt clearly has a problem (way out, way in, stalls, etc), and you immediately start wondering what their first real jump is going to look like. (one of the two kids I...

Re: Best ever marks for place

what about Hooker's Indoor World win at 5.90?? -6P I had to search to figure out what it means, but "Mark-for-Place" apparently means the best mark while taking nth place in a meet. IOW, the second best mark listed for all events on the list is the best mark that took 2nd place in a meet ...

Re: Convertion 4.60 to 4.90 poles, need some help

the general rule of thumb is that a 6 inch (15 cm) lower grip adds about 10 lbs of stiffness. So the same grip height on a 30 cm longer pole means (roughly) that the longer pole will behave approximately 20 lbs stiffer.

So a 175 4.90 would be close to a 195 4.60.
