Dragila Progressions and Records

Stacy's recent announcement of her retirement from vaulting, and even more recent news that she is expecting a baby, makes it unlikely that she will reach any more vaulting personal bests or records. Just to make sure that PVP subscribers are aware of just how great has been her contributions to our...

Re: Slow Start?

Just so you'll know it was my mistake and not Mirko's, he also lists a new Slovenian national indoor record by Tina Sutej, finishing second with 4.32 at Fayetteville on 23 January.

Slow Start?

If anyone has shared my view that the indoor season is off to a slow start, then we just hadn't checked Mirko Jalava's world list <tilastopaja.org> recently. Today, he shows the following new national records, except the one below his men's threshold of five meters. Thanks, too, to Heinrich Hubbelin...

Re: USA All-Time Top Ten

I’ve had a chance to check, as best I could, on the individual bests of several vaulters believed to have a place on the men’s all-time top ten. Here’s what I found: 5.96o Joe Dial (1) Norman 18 June 1987 5.91i Joe Dial (1) Columbia, MO 1 February 1986 5.80o Daniel Ryland (2) Linz 23 August 2005 5.8...

Re: USA All-Time Top Ten

Corrections to top ten lists: kev44000 wrote that Joe Dial’s 5.69 national record should have been on the outdoor list. True, and I can’t offer any excuse for my sloppy work, since the beginning point for these lists was the USA progression and Dial’s 5.96 of 1987 was there, along with his 5.91 and ...

USA All-Time Top Ten

On December 17, I posted indoor and outdoor lists of USA women who had vaulted 4.60m or better. When I thought a bit about what minimum mark would be equivalent for men's lists, I realized that a better format for both the men's and women's elite lists would be the all-time top ten, regardless of wh...

Re: T&F News World Rankings 2009

Still, it's hard to accept Jenn being ranked below FIVE vaulters (Rogowska, Pyrek, Feofanova, Silverburg and Golubchikova) whose seasonal bests weren't as good as hers.

Re: Oldest/Youngest on 2009 Outdoor World List

On Dec 10, Robert Schmitt wrote that Mel Mueller had 4.11m in 2009. Since I had not recorded a height for her since her PR 4.60 in 2003, asked Mirko Jalava <tilastopaja.net> if he could find the meet in any of his many sources. Fourteen (!) minutes later, at about midnight Helsinki time, he replied ...

Oldest/Youngest on 2009 Outdoor World List

With almost no indoor results so far, my thoughts turned to Stacy's retirement and, from there, to wondering whether she was the oldest vaulter to make Mirko Jalava's world list in her final outdoor season. Mirko's lists <tilastopaja.org> are by far the most comprehensive summaries of performances b...

Dumas Passes 1,000 Mark

With the 2009 indoor and outdoor seasons past, my friend and former vaulting mentor Gérard Dumas informs me that he has accomplished a career goal of a thousand competitions without including in that total any beach vaults or meets where he recorded no heights. Now 74, Gérard has competed in a total...
