Bamboo, Metal and Fiberglass

The last time I remember having this discussion about the relative advantages and disadvantages of bamboo, metal and fiberglass was in 2001. I just ran across a letter I wrote to another geezer-vaulter at the time. Those who have never tried to vault with a bamboo or metal pole might find parts of i...

Masters Standards of Excellence

If there are any geezers out there who are entertaining thoughts of picking up a pole and having a go, you might be interested in what (U.S.) National Masters News describes as "Standards of Excellence" for each age category at their website, <www.nationalmastersnews.com>. They don't further define ...

Isinbayeva vs. Feofanova

Gérard Dumas has had me bird-dogging Tatyana Polnova, Russia's #3, trying to find any mark for her in 1999. I had her vaulting for Turkey, as Tatiana Tuna Köstem, from 1998 to 2001; as Taytana Polnova, for Russia, from 2002 to present. I couldn't find any kind of mark for her in 1999, although...

Men's Results

Interesting to see from the scoresheet that when they moved to 5.85, due to passes at 5.80 by the three medalists, Pavlov was leading; when they moved to 5.90, Gibilisco was leading. Lots of pressure there! I thought Toby's third attempt at 5.95 had the best height of the competition: just not quite...

Men's Qualifications Top PBs

The 2004 outdoor season has been a fairly quiet one for the men, so I was surprised at the list of PBs provided by the IAAF site. I don't follow the men's event nearly as closely as the women's, so I wasn't aware how tightly-grouped the top level of vaulters are in their all-time bests. I had settle...

Sixth-place Tie, again

Sorry for a typo in my earlier post. Hamackova wasn't attempting a new PB at 4.55. (She improved the CZE record to 4.60 in 2003.) I was trying to delete that phrase when the excitement got to me and I choked.

That Sixth-Place Tie

I'll leave analysing the top results to someone who may have been fortunate enough to see all the attempts of the top vaulters, except to note that the first five places were in exact order of the seasonal bests of those place-winners. What caught my eye was the devastating effect of the six-inch ra...

Top Olympic Hopefuls--Women

In its August 2nd issue, Sports Illustrated offered its medal picks. For the women's pole vault, they were: Gold--Svetlana Feofanova, Russia Silver--Yelena Isinbayeva, Russia Bronze--Stacy Dragila, United States This time, I can't take exception to their three medal nominees, although the order of f...
