Re: Take off step
All approaches in the jumps are primarily based on rhythm; the pole vault shouldn't be any different. As already suggested, get away from the pit and run your approach on the track. What I further suggest is counting your takeoff step on each subsequent stride so that when you're at your final step,...

Re: Can't stop rowing
If I'm reading your post correctly, you are "rowing" to get inverted. Would this be correct? If so, it is not necessary and actually inhibits your from inverting because by rowing you are activating your bottom arm which changes the axis. The axis should be the top hand. What Kirk stated a...

Re: takeoff probs.
Kirk's suggestion regarding jumping to a basketball hoop is excellent. It can also be taken a step further. Using a "stubbie", also jump up attempting to touch stubbie to hoop. And more importantly, make sure you are driving both hands up with stubbie with the emphasis on touching the bott...

Re: takeoff probs.
One of the things I discovered preventing a vaulter from taking off was not moving the arms fast enough above the head into take off. I've heard it stated that the hands have to move faster than the feet at take off. Despite not know why you're not taking off, athletically and perceptually you know ...

Re: Transitioning to a bigger pole
You're not going to get any better advice than Rainbowgirl gave you regarding moving your hand down the 13' pole. To take it a step further, however, I suggest you develop better technique on the 12' - 150. Think about this.........11' on a 12' pole. Do you know how many HS guys are vaulting 12-6 to...

Re: Physics Based Critique of the Petrov Method
Just want to thank Kirk for his link to the "Round Table with Sergery Bubka". Having read this info numerous times as second hand information, it was good to get something direct from the "horse's mouth". I feel so on the right track concerning what I'm teaching and why right dow...

Re: Tall female vaulter and the swing
Just a little more thought on being under (although I won't be as illustrative as being "a little dead" - HA). Compare the swing to kicking either a soccer ball for distance or punting a football. In either case, the athlete steps forward with the non-kicking leg in order to stretch out th...

Re: Pole Progression & Flex #'s
Sorry it took so long to get back to you..............as it is track season, I have been quite busy with meets. Anyway, hope I can be of help. Ok, based on the info you provided, I believe the 15' - 170 Spirit pole will be ok. Despite the pole being "older" really has nothing to do with an...

Re: The Pole Plant
Suggestion: stop trying to bend the pole. Pushing with the bottom arm to bend the pole is a technique that a really good athlete with speed and strength can do (like an ex Olympian), but this technique is not for everyone. For most, pushing with the bottom arm only makes it difficult to invert; bloc...

Re: Pole Progression & Flex #'s
First consideration is how high are you currently vaulting? And, where are you currently holding the 14' - 160 Spirit? And, how many steps (total) is your approach. Only based on the limited info you gave, the 15' - 170 might be a possibility holding down a few inches. But, need the other info to co...

Re: Vaulter w/no experience. Need to improve in less than 2wk
Once again we don't seem to be able to agree on this site regarding PV technique. Altius is completely wrong to suggest that you need a magician. As I tell the beginning vaulters I work with...................it's simply magic dust! Or, perhaps endless reps developing technique. Sorry, two weeks is ...

Re: Help with invert! *video
First of all KirkB hit on a very important factor which keeps you from inverting well: you should not focus on keeping the bottom arm straight at take off. If you are a very strong, fast individual that technique might work; of course after many, many difficult reps. Actually, it is not the bottom a...
