swing

Hope it helps...for younger vaulters, if you watch the elites on film, remember that it is a little different because they are holding much higher and taking off from further out. They are applying pressure forward for a longer time before they are in position to apply pressure down. You will probab...

rock back

I feel that I have to chime in here. True, a lot of stuff helps, ie. pool vaulting, any gymnastic movements. I think everyone is "right on" when they say improve your runup, takeoff and to swing all the way back and get your hips up. One thing that is missing is what the arms are doing through the p...

shoulder problems

Thought you may like to know that is what I dealt with all year last year. I would follow any advice the physical threrapists give you to alleviate the prob. You can do a lot of other drills...which is what I did that dramatically changed my take-off. In the meantime, a lot of ice. You can do a ton ...

sitting

Another drill you can try is to set up a low bungee(like 6-8 feet) and perform a swing drill from 6-8 steps(or 3-4 left steps), but you should also use your arms while you are swinging to lift your hips up and over the bar. Basically you are performing a stiff pole-vault over a low bar. When you get...

"Ingenuity plus courage plus work equals miracles!!!" If some of you dont know Bob Richards, he is the only vaulter to win back to back Olympic Gold Medals...just happens to be an American! A quote that I have used over the years!!!!

reno

yes, I will be at reno. I will be trying to jump as high as I can! Of course, it will be early. The way I design the program, it is difficult to set pb's in January, but, I have vaulted from 5 strides and technically those jumps are better than ever! I usually come off the top of the pole sideways, ...

mack hs pr

Yes, 13'6" in high school that is true. 15'6 first year in college, 17'3" the next year, and 17'5 the year after that. I ended up jumping 18' the next year, then 18'4 for my final red-shirt year. A long road, but it paid off. I really just tried to get better at everything instead of just vaulting. ...

the journal

the journal was a big part of my success at the Games. It takes all the thinking out of competing. I suggest using two different ones maybe one for practice and one for competitions..the numbers will be different! The things I keep track of are: Pole used with what grip at what height with what stan...

flexibility

Flexibility is obviously an important facet of the vault. I will perform some stretching everyday I workout. If I am lifting, I will break it up and stretch the muscles I am working out in between sets...this is an efficient way to get stretches in while also breaking up the monotony. If I am vaulti...

Vaulting in C-town

For what it is worth, I go home to cleveland often. I live in Westlake and train when I go home for the holidays. I will be home the week before T-giving and Christmas. Depending on my schedule, there is always a possibility we could meet at Westlake high school, or Baldwin Wallace College and maybe...

You could probably use it every once in awhile. You can also use a stationary bike for speed work...I did it a few times over the years...when your legs are injured, you have to improvise! You probably dont want use it all the time...there is never not magic pill! It may take some stress off of the ...

eat b4 jumping

This is by far one of the most important things out there. Nothing worse than being full b4 jumping, or not being satisfied! You should have eaten enough the 2-3 days before the competition anyway...enough good foods. Stick with clean foods, not processed. Balanced meal...Chicken/fish, with small am...
