Re: Fixing a take off that is under

Certainly agree with Tory's comment regarding "trust" of your steps. However, that trust comes from working on the required skill for a good take off. My experience as a coach has taught me that most vaulters don't know how to jump. Simply put, the take off in the vault (or high jump or lo...

Re: Should I Move Up a Pole?

As noted...........then don't. I'm always willing to learn so please provide me with precise details regarding the vaulter's death; for example where, the year it occurred and level. Thank you.

Re: Should I Move Up a Pole?

Ok, I must admit I am a fraud. For the past 30 years I have stolen from other pole vault coaches regarding teaching technique. I have taken athletes to numerous pole vault camps which feature some of the best names in the business; some nationally renown and others with a very successful pole vault ...

Re: Should I Move Up a Pole?

A "tap" is not a quick fix. It is used to help a vaulter gain confidence. I am perplexed as to why a coach shouldn't assist a vaulter learning to get into the pit. As a prior gymnastic coach, it is common practice to spot athletes through skill development. So why not in the pole vault? Th...

Re: Should I Move Up a Pole?

Holding down, as noted in another post by pvcpcoach, will decrease the flex. Since you wrote you were "maxing out the pole" (which usually means getting too much penetration), moving down a fist or so on the pole stiffens the effects it gives you allowing you to get more vertical without s...

Re: Should I Move Up a Pole?

A smart vaulter makes the best vaulter and lives to talk about his PRs. If you are now clearing 11' on the 12' pole and have just started to bend the pole (and not having a reasonably bigger pole to move to), you will be good to continue on the 140. Keep working your approach and take off getting co...

Re: highschool pole vault

Five days? Your take off improved in five days? Maybe a little better, but not good enough to invert well. You'll need literally 100s of reps to get to the point where you can learn to keep the trail leg back at take off, stretching out the muscles, whereby the "whip" will take care of its...

Re: Desperate to buy/rent in New York

Outside the city where? The Hudson Valley Flying Circus Pole Vault Club is located North of the City in Goshen, NY. They actually rent poles, but not sure if it is for members only. You can look them up online of course and contact Tim (owner) and ask.

Re: highschool pole vault

I believe it is the simplest of fixes regarding a free take off. Do "runovers" (vaulting on the ground) continuously. The elements of a free take off are so incorporated in this drill. First you have to jump up on the pole. Key word being jump. Secondly, you have to have your top hand high...

Re: highschool pole vault

From what I've read, you are so there! Seems the trouble might be, you stop moving through the vault. Let's be clear: there are NO phases in the vault! Vaulting is a continuous actions from the first steps until you clear the bar. Many high school vaulters seem to "flag out" at the top bec...

Re: Using a larger pole

Best thing that ever happen to pole vaulting is women. In my experience coaching women versus men is that women will work on developing technique with a cautious side to them. The men just want to vault high, high, higher with whatever it takes and will in many cases risk injury. Also men become so ...
