Where were the better vaulters from the west coast area. As far as vaulters Nike will be the best meet this year as far as competition. But still a few of the better vaulters are not going. Hummm

At one time, the Golden West was the most prestigious high school meet in the country. They only invited the top 8 in each event and housed all of the athletes in a dorm on Sac State campus. The athletes and coaches had to pay for their flights, but were taken care of once they were there. I went in 1988 and was blown away by the hospitality. They had us come in 3 or 4 days before the actual meet and took us down to San Fransisco for a day trip on one of the piers. Each event had it's own corporate sponsor and a group leader that took us around and provided us with activities and other little treats.

We took a group of kids out there in 2005. Different site, different sponsor. No frills, no anything! It was a little more exciting than our conference meet here at home. The stands were almost empty and the officials didn't seem to have a clue about the pole vault. We spent a lot of money for a HUGE let down!

As for NIKE....We actually had a tailwind last year, but only a few kids took advantage of it. They do a great job putting on the meet even though we would like the pit turned to our advantage. It's a cool place to visit and I really enjoy the scenery on the trip!

Now im not sure what they will do for nike as far as winds, but so far, the meets run there this year have been into a tail wind, or at least a cross. They have put in new boxes, one on both ends of the runway but im pretty sure whoever they hired to do it did it wrong. At Regionals, the pit was set up on one of the end boxes but the lip of the box was showing and an unfortunate event occured, but anyways they switched the mats again. At the high school state meets this year there were perfect conditions, but im certainly not promising that at nike. Im just hoping, like the rest of us, that the winds are kind and the mats are in the right spot, but i enjoyed jumping at nike.

My last trip was 96 and it was great then. Cookout on Thursday night, day trip to San Francisco on Friday, banquet with a speaker Friday night, meet Saturday had only top 8 so all finals, and awards banquet on Saturday night. All athletes stayed in dorms and Saturday night was like a lock in with games and fun stuff for them to do all night. Hate that it changed.
Winners find a way to win, losers find an excuse.
