Eligibility Question.

Unread postby WiscoVaulter » Sat Jan 11, 2014 1:21 am

Hello, I am a senior in high school in Wisconsin. I am actively looking for meets in my area to compete at and sharpen up before my season starts in early March. I had the idea of going to D3 college meets or even D1 meets depending on the opening bar. I would be competing unattached or maybe with my vaulting club (GetVertical PV) and I would not wear any of my school's uniform. Would this make me ineligible? Would the idea of college coaches being at these meets, (Especially coaches of colleges that I'm interested in) be a good thing? Any thoughts or answers would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Best advice I can give is check with you state HS association. I'm not 100% sure but seems to me I heard that HS can only compete against college athletes in an open meet. Best bet check before you compete. This is not a case where it is "easier to get forgiveness than to get permission". Get permission first. Best of luck!

Would not do it. In Oklahoma you would forfeit your high school season if you got caught. Do not do it.

Do not listen to anyone that says do it, but do not listen to anyone that says do not do it. Just find out the real rule for your state.

Every state is different. Some states you can jump unattached anywhere you want high school/college/club/elite. Others you can only jump in high school, in that state, for your team.

Some people depending on the rule and depending on their situation do different things.

Every state has different rules, but I am sure your club coaches know what those rules are for your area, so ask them :) As far as the NCAA goes, I think it is OK as long as it is an open meet.

Update: I have checked multiple sources. It is legal in Wisconsin and I would not lose any eligibility, also it is allowed by NCAA rules. The only stipulation made is that the competition must take place out of season.

Do yourself a favor and talk with your athletic director before you go to any meet. It's his job to know this stuff. Where in Wisconsin do you live?
