Skipper vs. Carrigan

Unread postby rainbowgirl28 » Mon Jun 16, 2003 2:35 pm

How high would Tommy have to vault to be as amazing as Casey Carrigan was in 68-69?

Carrigan competed in the Mexico Olympics fall of his senior year. He had a great shot at medaling, but got screwed over by an old rule that said if the pole went under the bar it was a miss (the rule was changed shortly thereafter).

Carrigan also made attempts at World Records while in high school.

The biggest thing against Carrigan is that the event was rapidly evolving at that time because fiberglass poles were so new. But 17-4.75 is still an extraordinary mark by a high schooler!

I am going to say 19' on the old pegs or 18'9" on the new ones for Tommy would put him in that amazing range. But that is just my opinion ;) Carrigan is my all time vault hero, so I may be a bit biased.

to make it all fair i guess he would have to take attempts at the WR on the old pegs and he'd have to jump over 19 on the new pegs. what casey did was a feat in his time. if skipper jumped 19 consistenly between now and next year he could punch his ticket to the Olympics in the vault not to mention the decath.

Carrigan jumped 96% of 18' - a height which would not even be jumped for 3 more years!

96% of 20' is 19'2.5

Skipper is about a foot short of Carrigan by my math.

carrrigan update

Unread postby ~jj~ » Sun Oct 05, 2003 4:35 pm

Actually, Carrigan made the 1968 Olympic Team in the fall of his Junior year. He jumped 17' at the Olympic trials in South Lake Taho, Ca. as a junior. In 1969 he jumped 17'4" at the Golden west meet. The meet also featured super grates: Steve Smith 16'8, Dave Roberts 16', and Robert Pollard 16'?
Casey has been a Long Beach fireman and paramedic for many years subsequent to his retirment.

It was technically fall of his senior year. It was fall '68 and he graduated spring '69. I believe the trials were in September '68 (just a few weeks too late for him to be considered a junior) and the Olympics were in October '68. That's why his jump of 17' did not count as a Junior class record.

Your right!

Unread postby ~jj~ » Sun Oct 05, 2003 5:42 pm

Ooops! :o
Your right, Rainbow.
I stand corrected.
I actually see him once in a while. I'll tell him he still has some fans.

Who were the other male High schoolers to make the 1968 team?
Hint:
One ran the 1500, the other was a HJ'er

He has a lot of fans in WA still. A good assault was made on his records over the past few years. His class records were broken by Matt Merritt (15'0" frosh), McKane Lee (15'9" soph), and Tyson Byers (16'8.75" junior). Tyson came closest to his record with a 17'1" jump in 2002, but with the graduation of McKane last year, Carrigan's record looks to stand for several more years.

I gave McKane a copy of an article on Carrigan that came out a few years ago. I know he has been a real inspiration to both of us.
