Jan. 19, 2009 - Despite the indoor track and field season only one meet in, North Central College's Jake Winder (Jr., Joliet, Ill./Plainfield South) has already made waves among the nations elite, vaulting 5.50 meters, a mark that currently leads the nation among all collegiate competitors.

Competing at the Private College Invitational in Kenosha, Wis. on January 17, Winder easily won the pole vault to automatically qualifying for the NCAA Division III National Championships and shatter the old indoor school record of 5.22m set last season by Mike Bina '08. Winder's vault not only qualified him for the National Championships but is also good enough to automatically qualify at the Division I level. His vault, which converts to 18 feet and ½ inch, is over a foot higher than the next competitor in Division III and is roughly four inches better than the Division I leader, Jordan Scott of the University of Kansas (5.40m).

The junior was an All-American in 2008, finishing second at the Indoor National Championships in Ada, Ohio while also qualifying for Nationals in the outdoor season. Winder and the Cardinal track and field squad return to action on Friday, January 23, traveling back to Wisconsin for the UW-Oshkosh Triangular at the Kolf Sports Center.

(correction: Jordan Scott jumped 5.50 this past weekend. Nice job!)
