Joseph Samaniuk

Joe Samaniuk joins the University of Wisconsin men’s track and field coaching staff as a volunteer assistant for the 2009 season. He specifically assists the Badgers in the pole vault.

Samaniuk comes to the UW following a successful collegiate career at Virginia Tech, where he was an NCAA championships qualifier and two-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference performer from 2003-2007. He finished sixth at the ACC outdoor championships both as a junior in 2006 and a senior in 2007, while he recorded a third-place finish at the conference indoor meet during his senior campaign.

Twice a qualifier to the NCAA East Regional, Samaniuk finished seventh with a clearance at 17 feet, 1 inch during his junior season. As a senior, he cleared 17-5 to claim third place, all-region honors and a berth in the NCAA outdoor championships.

His collegiate-best clearance of 17-5 1/2, set during his senior season, still ranks fifth on the Hokies’ all-time list.

Samaniuk has continued to compete in the pole vault since graduating from Virginia Tech and owns a personal-best mark of 17-9 1/2.

A native of Rexford, N.Y., Samaniuk earned undergraduate and master’s degrees from Virginia Tech in chemical engineering and currently is pursuing a doctorate at the UW.

Bryan Schiding

Position:
Assistant Men's Track and Field Coach
Alma Mater:
Bucknell, 2000

Bryan Schiding is in his first year as an assistant coach with Missouri Southern after spending six years as the assistant coach in cross country and track and field at Missouri S&T.

While at S&T, Schiding was twice named as the NCAA Division II regional "Coach of the Year", earning the honor in 2007 for the Great Lakes Region after the Miners posted their highest finish ever at an NCAA championship meet, then again in 2009 as the Missouri S&T men's team swept the Great Lakes Valley Conference titles with strong performances from its sprinters and jumpers keying the title runs. Schiding also helped coach three different pole vaulters last season at S&T to a height over 17 feet.

S&T sent eight individuals to NCAA championship competition in 2009 and all eight came home with All-America honors. Jordan Henry finished as the national runner-up at the NCAA Indoor Championships for the second consecutive year and took fifth outdoors, while Peter Hollenbeck and Dan Hellwig tied for eighth in the indoor season. Hollenbeck would finish fourth at the outdoor meet and javelin thrower Heath Groom finished sixth.

The women's team also had two All-America efforts at the outdoor meet which came from Tamara McCaskill with a third in the high jump and Aubrey Moore in the 400-meters.

The men's team finished in a tie for 12th overall at the 2007 indoor nationals with all three of its individuals -- whom Schiding worked with during the season -- placing in scoring positions at the meet. Tyrone Smith, who earned a trip to the Beijing Olympics in 2008, finished second in the long jump, while Lucas Handley took third and Jordan Henry seventh in the pole vault during that season.

In 2008, Henry was the national runner-up in the indoor pole vault at the national meet and fourth place finisher at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships after finishing as the GLVC champion in the event in both conference meets.

Henry, who became the first pole vaulter at S&T to ever clear 17 feet during the 2008 season, was named as the GLVC's "Student-Athlete of the Year" and Academic All-America following both his junior and senior seasons in the program -- he was also named as the GLVC's Paragon Award winner in 2009 -- and was joined on the All-America stand by Jared Anders during the indoor season (where he finished seventh) and Peter Hollenbeck at the outdoor meet (sixth).

The Miner sprinters and field event competitors have had great success under Schiding's guidance. In his first six years at Missouri S&T, he has had athletes set 61 new school records and has had 147 all-conference performances. Missouri S&T has also seen four individuals earn the Great Lakes Valley Conference "Freshman of the Year" award and had 67 individuals qualify for the NCAA Championships with 22 earning All-America honors.

Missouri S&T has had a great deal of national success in the pole vault, where Henry has earned five All-America awards, Hollenbeck three and J.R. Skola and Lucas Handley two apiece over the last six seasons; Henry and Skola have been national runner-ups in the event. In addition, Whitney Rasmussen finished fifth in the high jump at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships in 2005 -- as the only freshman on the podium in that event -- while Jamie Webb earned eighth place honors in the 100-meter dash at the 2005 outdoor championships and also earned league championships in the event.

One of the more decorated individuals in track recently has been Tyrone Smith, who earned numerous awards for his performances in the long jump including two national runner-up finishes and a fourth place showing in the event at the 2006 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships. Smith, who was named as the top field athlete for the Great Lakes Region for the 2006 indoor season, was the Great Lakes Valley Conference champion in the indoor (2006 and 2007) and outdoor long jump as well as the indoor triple jump in both 2006 and 2007; he was named as the GLVC "Male Athlete of the Year" for the indoor track season. Smith went on to set the Bermuda national record in the long jump to later earn him a spot on Bermuda's national team that competed at the Olympic Games in Beijing, China in August 2008.

Smith finished 15th in the competition in Beijing, just three centimeters away from a spot in the finals.

Prior to joining the Missouri S&T coaching staff, Schiding served as an assistant track and field coach at LaSalle University in Philadelphia for the three seasons. He coached both the men's and women's field events and also worked with the sprinters and hurdlers. The men's team won the Atlantic-10 indoor championship in 2003 -- its first title in seven years -- and finished second in the conference during the outdoor season. Meanwhile, the women's team had a second place finish in at the league's indoor meet in 2002.

He has helped coach teams to a total of five Atlantic-10 Conference championships, including two men's and two women's titles in cross country, and those teams established 11 new school records during his three seasons on the staff.

Schiding was the team captain while competing at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa., from where he graduated in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in economics. He set the school record in the indoor long jump and won conference titles in the long jump (twice) and triple jump; he earned seven all-conference awards during his career at Bucknell. Schiding also competed in the sprint and hurdle events as well as the relays.

He earned his masters degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing from LaSalle. Schiding currently resides in Joplin with his wife, Stephanee.

Missouri S&T has announced that Kyle Rutledge, a three-time All-America performer in the pole vault at Missouri Southern State University and most recently an assistant coach at Johnson County Community College, will become the new assistant track and field coach for the S&T program.

Rutledge is taking over for Bryan Schiding, who has been in the post for the last six seasons and is stepping down to become Missouri Southern’s assistant track and field coach. Rutledge’s father, Tom, is the Lions’ head coach.

“We were sorry to see Bryan go, but we appreciate all that he has done for our programs,” said Mark Mullin, S&T’s director of athletics. “Kyle will be an excellent addition to our coaching staff. He brings with him a great deal of technical knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm. His areas of expertise are exactly what we were looking for. I am extremely excited to have Kyle and his wife Natalie joining our Missouri S&T family.”

“Kyle is one of the best young coaches and recruiters in the Midwest,” said Missouri S&T head coach Sterling Martin. “We’re glad to have a coach of his caliber joining our program. He is someone who can keep our pole vaulters at the level they have reached in the conference and nationally, while helping us maintain our commitment to developing a strong all-around track and field program.”

During the 2009 season, Rutledge worked with the sprinters, hurdlers, throwers and multi-event athletes; several of those individuals earned all-conference honors.

Prior to his year at Johnson County, Rutledge spent two seasons as the assistant coach at Missouri Southern where he was in charge of the jumpers, sprinters and multi-event athletes. In those two seasons at MSSU, he coached 18 individuals that earned berths to the NCAA Division II Championships (13 pole vaulters, four high jumpers and one multi-event competitor) and 11 of them earned NCAA Division II All-America honors. He also coached eight conference champions and 31 all-conference performers in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

Prior to his stint as a coach at MSSU, Rutledge was a standout student-athlete for the Lions’ track and field team who was the MIAA champion in the outdoor pole vault in 2004. He earned three All-America awards during his five trips to the NCAA Division II Championships, which included a national runner-up finish at the 2006 indoor meet and third place showing outdoors in 2005. He also placed sixth at the 2003 NCAA indoor championship meet.

In addition to his conference title in 2004, Rutledge also earned six all-conference awards in the pole vault during his career at MSSU, where he ranks among the top 10 all-time performers in the pole vault. He earned all-state honors during his prep career at Joplin High School, where he set the Joplin High record in the event.

I _think_ he was coaching the vaulters at Miami, but it doesn't sound like he will be doing that at Long Beach State.

Track and field: LBSU hires assistant coach
Long Beach State track and field hired Shaun Meinecke as an assistant coach, 49er head coach Andy Sythe announced Friday.
Meinecke will work with sprinters, hurdlers and relay teams. He spent three years as an assistant track and field coach at Miami University (Ohio), producing six Mid-American Conference champions, five national appearances and two All-American performances.
Prior to his time at Miami, Meinecke spent two years as the head coach for Georgia Southern’s women’s cross country and track and field teams. He won two Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year awards during his tenure.
The former NCAA Division III All-American decathlete won a national championship as a member of the distance medley relay team at Luther College.

I hope not. I can't vouch for Jack's expertise either way, but Ohio State wasn't widely known for it vault program during his tenure there as far I know.....
