Somehow Tennessee seems to have been left off the men's list:

Michael Hogue - JR - 17' 8.5"
Andy Lane - SR - 17' 2"
Chris Helwick - SR - 17' 1" (decathlete)
Brad Holtz - SO - 16' 7"

Its not always about the coach(program) that has the best preformers, but the coach that can turn a decent vaulter to a great vaulter. We have to keep in mind that most of these vaulters was relatively good coming out of high school and went to the programs they are at now. Lets not forget about schools that have young coaches that has to start out somewhere, until those coaches get that opportunity no one will know who that coach is!! So just because Tenneesee had a bunch of good vaulters or VT had a bunch of good vaulters doesnt mean that there coach is good.

Please DONT GET ME WORNG VIRGINIA TECH AND TENNEESEE COACH ARE GREAT COACHES, I'VE SEEN FROM EXPERIENCE.....just hypathically speaking.

I think the merit of a coach has alot to do with the amount of improvement all of their athletes make from high school.

MAybe that would shed light on the subject.

I've got a kid there now as a freshman who jumped 15' 6" in high school last year. They (A&M) haven't started vaulting yet and they have a meet in mid January.

We're in a very technical event not to jump for long periods of time. I don't get that approach but that's another topic. All I know is that my most dramatic improvements for the kids I work with is when they jump in the Fall. Right now I've got a 15' 6" senior that jumped 9' 6" two years ago. That didn’t happen without jumping - ALOT. My motto was if you're not ready to PR at Reno, you're behind schedule.

The idea still holds true if you are not going to Reno. You should be far enough along in your training to be competitive on big poles in January!

Does A&M have recources available for their vaulters year round? i know here at ACU the pit is out year round for anyone to come jump, and there is a gymnastics facility also available year round. Plus the weight rooms etc.. all the givens.

I'm sure they do but I'm not sure the pits are out. I'll see the guy Friday at practice and will ask. They were only allowed to do sandpit drills a few times in the fall.

Another girl there who jumped 12', didn't "make the team" after a two week try out, even though they didn’t vault. She’s training with my coach, Kris Allison, and will compete open. They felt they had enough girls. I’m not slamming the program as I know the coach. I just think you can’t expect to get better at vaulting by not doing it for long periods of time.

I’m back home in Texas now (since 2001) but in my 14 years at UC Irvine (Southern California), we worked with lots of outside kids and saw huge improvements. We run, lift, bound, gymnastics, etc. but we still jumped two days a week. In the summer we drop all the other stuff and vault three days a week for fun and technical/push off goals. Sample results;
