There are terrible individual vault coaches at some schools, and there are excellent vault coaches who also coach jumps or whatever at other schools. It can be distracting if your coach has a lot of other responsibilities, but some coaches juggle it well and it's not always a disadvantage.

Ultimately I think that the best school for someone to vault at is one that they individual likes and responds well to the coaching style. If you don't completely trust your coach, or think you know better than him/her, you are going to have a hard time vaulting well.

Talley, Robert jumped 15-6 in Junior college @ saddleback.
Started in Junior college at 12-6 and transfered to UCLA after two years.

so many great vaulters dont do well in college and some thrive and there is no real 1 reason.i agree trust is a factor along with believe in a coach.some coaches can just guide and get the most potential from athletes.just as certain athletes are so gifted that its incredable so are some coaches who have just been incredably gifted.they can see the event and guide,motivate and make an athlete beleive far beyond their ability.these coaches are few but they do exist.take a good look around,look at the best vaulters and look at their coaches,how involved is the coach?how much does the vaulter believe in that coach,is that coach passionate and motivated.the fire in the coach must be equal to the fire in the athlete to work.some coaches just have a talent to produce results just as athletes do.i think in the end an athlete will know who that coach is when they meet them,they will sense it and see it in a coaches eyes.when that gut instict tells you that this is the coach who can get me to jump with the best then you have found THE BEST OVERALL SCHOOL TO JUMP AT.IT DOES NOT COME DOWN TO money,facilities,schedules or location
it comes down to coaching and believe!

I'd have to say there is no "best" vault school but a bunch of good ones. I agree that you need a good coach who can motivate the vaulter however you also need fellow vaulters. Very few people can keep motivated without good competition and (in my opinion) there is no better competition than that of your teammates. This is easily demonstrated by looking at the top performace lists many of the top vaulters also have a teammate or two on the list as well. Having someone to push you makes it a lot easier to be motivated for practice and keep on your toes. There's nothing worse than losing to the same person week after week. I would say go to a school with a coach with a good track record and a coaching style you like that also has vaulters of a similar age.

I have met Mike Hogan at many meets around Southern California. He is a great guy and knows the vault. Best of all he is a graduate of the University Of Notre Dame , Go Irish!

Does Occidental have a good pole vault program?

i think Andy and Occidental College would present a great opportunity for a vaulter to reach whatever level their talent would take them to.. Andy was a vaulter back in my day.. he loves the vault, wants to coach and wants to have the best or he wouldn't be doing it....southern cal.. the school and the area is beautiful.. plus plenty of competition without traveling very far...

and the education would be a plus...
