At lil old Eastern Illinois we have 3 guys over 16ft, Freshman- 17'1, Sophmore- 16'4, Junior- 16'8
and In a year and half we have a girl that went from 9ft to 12'1.

I think they will all go 4-6 inches higher before the end of indoor.

What about the BYU vault program this year? Seem to be tearing it up but is it because of coaching? or just gifted athletes and great facilities?

I think it is great coaching!! (I may be somewhat biased though). We have some phenomenal athletes right now, and that is very helpful. If you look at the history of BYU though, it's pretty impressive. I can't remember a year since around 1995 when we didn't have at least one vaulter make it to nationals (I guess I could look it up but I have too many other things to do).

North Central College is a division 3 school in Illinois, they have (5.22 sophmore, 5.20 freshman, 5.10 junior, and 5.00 sophmore). That is exceptional at a Division 1 level!

Also U of I has a good young class of vaulters. (5.28 freshman, 5.08 freshman, and 4.98 sophmore)

they on average are a good bit older which helps, but they also do have some very exceptional athletes and a very good coach!

If you want to vault at the best school then it needs to be determined by how you feel about the coach, school, and the program. One thing I have noticed is that athletes dont look for a school they can actually get better at. Sometimes they get drawn by the name of the school or the scholarship that is offered. Some of the best vaulters this country has produced have come from small schools. Its the athletes that determine how good they can become.

More that any other events the pole vault and hammer throw are coach driven sports. So the key is the competence and passion of the vault coach at the college in question . and are they going to be there throughout the athletes career. On the evidence this is not as common as it ought to be. I also have to say that taking a quick look around college ranking lists and results does not fill me with any great confidence in the overall quality of vault coaches at the college level. Given the facilities, time for training and the vast range of competition opportunities at most if not all colleges I believe many are not doing the job. Challenging - but having spent considerable time working in a less than favourable environment, like most coaches in OZ, I believe standards in US colleges should be much higher.

I do realise that the vault is the poor relation in many programs and often assigned to anyone willing to take it on, but coaching this event is not rocket science - how many college coaches are real students of the event and of how best to teach and coach it. Not as many as there should be. I trust this will get a vigorous response -if only to show there is indeed some passion out there.
