What is the rule/law on using pictures of college athletes on a website. Becca, I know you have the picture of the guy in the Illinois uniform on the front page.

If you take the picture you have the copyright and can pretty much use it however you want.
As far as I know, I'm not a copyright expert, but Russ VerSteeg is. I took the picture on the front page during a track meet which is a public event. I turned up this from Google which probably answers your question:

If a photo is taken in a public event that has no restrictions for photography, it usually becomes public domain.
If the event has a disclaimer, one might wish to get a release from the event manager.
There are other rules for college endorsments that may need to be looked at and could or could not apply!
It is always best to seek councel on these matters
