Kilmartin: From Eagle HS to NCAA champion

April L. Brown / AP

Donovan Kilmartin soared 17 feet, 8 1/2 inches in the pole vault, and won the NCAA indoor heptathlon in Arkansas.

Former Eagle High track and field star Donovan Kilmartin is now an NCAA champion.

Kilmartin, a true freshman at the University of Texas, won the heptathlon at the NCAA Indoor Championships on Saturday. He scored a collegiate-record 6,136 points in two days at the Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark.

The point total is the fifth-best ever by an American.

“I saw the end of it and it was a pretty impressive performance. I wish we could have found a way to keep that kid around,´´ said Boise State coach Mike Maynard, who had four athletes at the meet.

Texas coach Bubba Thornton said Kilmartin had five personal-bests in the seven events.

“As a young man, the focus he showed throughout the competition was outstanding,´´ Thornton said.

Kilmartin won three events â€â€
