Tommy Skipper, the Oregon freshman who had been a Duck for only a month or so before erasing the nearly two-decade-old school pole vault record, takes his show to his first national college stage this weekend.
"I'm just going to look at it like any other meet," said Skipper, who vaulted 18 feet, 8 3/4 inches last month to claim the school record that had been held by Kory Tarpenning at 18-6 1/2 since 1985.
Skipper and 10 other men and women UO athletes are entered in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at Fayetteville, Ark., a two-day meet that begins today.
"I think a lot of times people freak out, but I want to keep my emotions low and do the best I can," said Skipper, ranked first in the meet's field of 16 pole vaulters and just ahead of Washington's Brad Walker.
