Forgot to mention grip about a foot over your reach height with your top hand. Only move your grip up when you are DEEP in the pit. Move your grip up about 3 inches at a time. You will stiff pole for a while to learn the dynamics and that is a good thing. Safety, safety, safety.

Thanks for the tips. I assume all of this will make perfect sense once I get out there and try it.

Yes. The guy I'll be with has worked with some elite vaulters so apparently he knows his stuff. I trust I'll be in good hands.

NO!! I'm 56 and just started again after 38 years. I did a lot of research on the net and was fortunate to find a local club and coach about 25 minutes away. GO FOR IT!
