Kelso dominates Invite

Matt Montesano and Dylan Gaudette paced a dominant effort by the Kelso boys, and Andraya McCully and Kayla Davis led a similarly one-sided romp by the girls in the Kelso Invitational at Schroeder Field here Tuesday.

Team scores were not kept, but the Hilander boys won all but one event, and the Lassies all but four in the meet against R.A. Long and Mark Morris.

"Our boys' team should be in the hunt for a league title," Kelso coach Joe Krieder said. "I was very encouraged by a strong showing by our very young girls' team."

Montesano won the 100 (11.66), the 400 (54.93), joined Omar Zurita, Trent Crossland and Nick Jones to win the 4x400 relay (3:38.99), and teamed with Gaudette, Jordan Wishard and Tanner Davis to win the 4x100 relay (45.74). Gaudette won the long jump (21 feet, 4 inches) and triple jump (42-4 1/2).

Other winners for Kelso included Spencer Peck in the 110 hurdles (17.16), Faisal Abdullahi in the 1600 (4:32.0), Cody Clark in the shot put (48-11), freshman Adam Scalesse in the 300 hurdles (43.88), Nick Jones in the 800 (2:05.16), freshman Junel Cervantes in the 200 (23.63), Braden Keller in the javelin (1:55.3), Wishard in the pole vault (11-6), Aaron Cook in the 3200 (9:55.84), and Darry Rupe in the discus (131-6).

In the girls' meet, McCulley won the 100 (13.47), the 200 (28.79) and ran a leg on the winning 4x100 squad with Jennifer Wyatt, Lana Nyman and Jill Radcliffe (56.27). Davis won the high jump (4-8) and the 400 (56.27). Radcliffe won the 100 hurdles (17.92), and Veronica Mendoza won the 800 (2:33.2) and joined Cassy Tieg, Adriann Dahl and Jessica Warthen in winning the 4x400 relay (4:32.59). Dahl won the 1600 (5:49.69), Kelly Swanson won the 3200 (12:34.2), Amber Miles the discus (89-4), Chelsea Schultz the javelin (108-1), Jenna Bloomfeldt the long jump (14-7 1/2), and Kara Kitchens the pole vault (9-0).

Kelso will compete in the Rotary Relays at Longview Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

The Daily News did not receive reports from Mark Morris and R.A. Long.
