Prep track and field roundup -- Wells brothers lead the way at Papa Wells Invitational

YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

YAKIMA -- Junior Dana Wells captured three events -- besting his standout senior brother Aaron in the long jump -- in a 24-team track and field invitational named in honor of their grandfather on Saturday at Kumler Field.

Competing in the second annual Gene 'Papa' Wells Invitational, Dana Wells won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.4 seconds and doubled back for the 300 hurdles victory in 40.8. He also reached 21-6 to win the long jump with Aaron Wells second at 20-81/2.

Aaron Wells did win the javelin and he placed third in the triple jump.

Klickitat's Herschel Sanchey turned in a fine distance double, and Toppenish's Marco Martinez zipped to the 100 win in 10.8 and helped the Wildcats take the 4x100 in 44.1.

In the girls meet, Grandview's Anna George won all three throws, and Davis' Crystal Johnson (200, 400) and Trout Lake-Glenwood's Neola Putnam (800, 1,600) were double winners.

Davis' Sandra Martinez opened her season with an 11:24.3 clocking in the 3,200.

VANCOUVER - Needing to win the last four events of a crucial Greater St. Helens 3A League track meet, the Kelso girls stepped up in personal- and school record-setting fashion, helping the Lassies nip rival Columbia River 76-74 here Thursday.

After Jenna Bloomfeldt won the 200 (28.82), the Lassies needed wins in the 800 relay, 1600 relay and a sweep of the pole vault.

Lana Nyman, Jill Radcliffe, Jennifer Wyatt and Emma DeStromp obliged in the 800 (1:57.31). Kayla David, Cassie Teig, Paytyn Wheeler and Katie Reichert (4:22.79) set a personal record in the 1600. And Kara Kitchens started a 1-2-3 finish by Kelso pole vaulters with a vault of 11 feet flat, one inch better than her own school record, set last year at the 3A state meet.

"It was a great, exciting track meet," Kelso coach Joe Kreider said.

The Kelso boys completed the excitement by handling the River boys 93-52, led by double-winners Spencer Peck and Riley Davis.

"River is always very competitive in both boys and girls," said Kreider. "Getting by them this early was very exciting for our kids, and we're sitting in a good position in our league."

For the Kelso girls, who won eight of the 17 events and "really showed (their) depth," Kreider said, Wheeler won the 100 (13.36) and 400 (64.42). Reichert won the 300 hurdles (50.98), and Aubrey Hallett the 100 hurdles (17.09).

Kreider praised the contributions of Kelly Swanson and seniors Wyatt and Amber Miles.

Peck won both the 110 and 300 hurdles in 15.82 and 42.21, respectively, while Davis gave the Scotties a spark by acing the high jump (5-10) and triple jump (42-0).

Timeout with … Andrew Dremlyuga, senior, Kamiak track and field

Want a challenge? Try to correctly pronounce Andrew Dremlyuga's last name. But be warned: Many people have tried and failed miserably.

"I don't think I've ever had a substitute teacher that has got it right," said Dremlyuga (pronounced Drem-loo-guh), who often goes by the nickname A.D.

After moving at age 9 from Ukraine to the United States with his family, he learned English mainly by interacting with kids in sports and during recess. The first word he learned was "Hi."

These days the talkative senior is a track team captain who has no trouble expressing himself. Coming to America allowed him to meet a wide variety of people he said he wouldn't have encountered in the Ukraine.

"I've definitely enjoyed it," Dremlyuga said. "It's been a whole cultural experience."

Coach's corner

Besides having an outgoing, animated personality, Dremlyuga is a versatile athlete, Kamiak track coach Paul Kirkpatrick said. Dremlyuga competes in the triple jump and high jump. This season he's also trying the javelin for the first time and might do the 400-meter run.

"It makes life a whole lot easier because you can fill in the holes," Kirkpatrick said of the 6-foot-4 Dremlyuga's varied abilities.

It's fun to have lots of choices, Dremlyuga said: "That's definitely one thing I like about track. There's so many different events you can try."

Leader of the pack

Leading comes naturally for Dremlyuga, a third-year track participant whose personal-best mark in the triple jump is 39 feet, 5 inches. "I'm not one of those shy people," he said. "I like talking. I'm a friendly person."

True competitors

Dremlyuga's favorite pro athlete is Gilbert Arenas, a guard for the NBA's Washington Wizards. After watching a profile of Arenas on TV, Dremlyuga was inspired by the former University of Arizona star's dedication. "He's a competitive person, and I kind of see that in me," said Dremlyuga.

Pizza time

For a home-cooked meal, nothing beats Mom's mashed potatoes and chicken, Dremlyuga said. But he also loves pizza: "That's something we did not have in the Ukraine. I came over here and pizza was completely new to me. It tasted amazing."

Fantastic voyage

If he could travel anywhere, Dremlyuga would visit the Bahamas or Mexico, "where I can just relax and see a totally new culture." Plus, the warm weather would be a nice change, he said.

Sell, sell, sell

The marketing class at Kamiak is one of Dremlyuga's favorite. He enjoys learning about advertising strategies and plans to study business in college, probably at Gonzaga University.

Girls preseason track and field capsules

Black Hills Wolves

Coach: Tom St. Clair (second season)

Top returners: Nikki Farwell, sprints, relays; Telise Fullington, sprints, triple jump; Tasha Shipman, sprints, state qualifier, second in 400; Kelly Castro, 1600, ahead of best time of last year.

Top newcomers: Brittany Crawford, distance.

Comments: "We've got good speed. We've got good distance runners. We're starting over with new coaching staff. We're good on sprints and relays. We're hurting on jumps and throws for a while on the girls side."

Capital Cougars

Coach: Kevin Wright (ninth year)

Top returners: Hannah Scholes, qualified for state in 400; Amanda Wright, reached state the last two years, 1,600, 3,200; Rachael Thompson, 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles; Tosha Hollingsworth, state qualifier in 200; Ayla Mull, javelin; Emily Wallen, distance.

Top newcomers: Brianne Wright, distance, was Cougars' second finisher at state in cross country; Emily Enz, sprints; Johannah Verhulst, sprints; Kailyn Swarthout.

Coach's comment: "We were undefeated last year and won league, lost a lot of people, four girls who went to state who didn't turn out. Lost five girls who didn't turn out. We're not as deep as we were. We won a few league meets last year because of depth. Yelm, Timberline and Lakes. On paper those three and us should be top four in league. Our cross country team placed fifth at state in the fall. We have a number of girls who have clearly worked hard this off season. I am excited about what might be possible this year."

North Thurston Rams

Coach: Brent Warner (10th season)

Top returner: Rachel Kirkwood, 100, 200, placed at state; Chrissy Wichman, high jump, discus, 4 X 2 relay, made to district in high jump.

Top newcomers: BethAnn Feero, 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles; Joanne Wollstein, 3,200, made it to state in cross country; Sarah Gleaves, javelin

Notes: Has 19 girls turning out, but a talented group with potential.

Comments: "I have a fairly young squad. In our first meet, had freshmen score points for us. That's the first time that's happened in a while. As far as coachable kids, this is the best group. Very coachable. Lakes, Yelm, and Shelton on the guys side look tough. Capital is strong on the girls side".

Olympia Bears

Coach: Cris Violette (18th season)

Top returners: Laurel Stormans, eighth in the 300 hurdles; Jill Lahmann, state qualifier in the 200; Annie Dear, district qualifier in 1,600 and 3,200; Clare Kane, district qualifier in 3,200; Brandi Wolff, district qualifier in 400 and long jump.

River Ridge Hawks

Coach: Phil Lonborg (16th at River Ridge, and 31st overall)

Top returners: Brianna Schmid, state placer in the 400, 800, 800 relay, 1,600 relay; Allison Turner, state placer in 400 relay, 800 relay; Jessica Tarvin, 400, 1,600; Sara Tallman, javelin; Gabby Christianson, 200, relays; Allyson Turner, triple jump, relay.

Top newcomers: Lizzie Bevier, hurdles; Hannah Christianson, hurdles; Janay Creamer, throws.

Coach's comments: In our meet against Chehalis, we had 13 scored points and nine are new. Tuner, she's going to be dynamite. We've got some talent. Like every year, we aim for the end of the season. We're not as deep. It's going to be a tough league again.

Note: Between the boys and girls teams, River Ridge has won 14 league titles and placed in the top eight in state 14 times.

Shelton Highclimbers

Coach: Doug Sells

Top returners: Brenna Thompson, sprints; Alyssa Ready, sprints; Krystina Pietroski, distance; Jodie Hartman, 800.

Tumwater Thunderbirds

Coach: Rich Brown (3rd season)

Top newcomers: Alex Sele, sprints.

Coach's comments: "A young but talented team."

Timberline Blazers

Coach: Todd Taylor (eighth year)

Top returners: Christina Johnsen, throws, discus, should be among state leaders in discus, threw 118 feet at Shelton meet and was third in shot put with 31 feet; Rachel Estep, 1,600, 3,200; Susan McLean, sprints, 12.5 100, relays; Erica Legaspi, 300 hurdles; relays, pole vault; Samantha Dominiak, thrower, shot put; learning the javelin; Sarah Dominiak, twin, triple, long jumper, relays; Rene Wyman, 800, relays.

Newcomers: Briana Welsh, sprints, 200, relays, 26.7 200; Amber Campbell, shot, discus, pole vault.

Comments: Looked good against Clover Park, but they don't have depth. If we stay healthy, we'll be okay. Capital and Yelm are loaded. We should be competitive. Beat Lakes last year. We have a little more depth. Bunch of good kids. I'm optimistic. But it's a tough league.

Yelm Tornados

Coach: Dan Baker (third year)

Top returners: Courtney Cannon, district competitor in triple jump; Ashley Taylor, 1600, 3200, just missed going to state; Devon Walker, hurdler state qualified; Alysha McCloud, hurdles; Katala Bartlett, javelin, discus; Tamisha Harris, shot put, discus.

Newcomers: Alex Bachmeier, sprinter; Layla Bader, sprinter, jumper, has shot at breaking school triple jump record.

Coach's comments: "We have a lot of talented freshmen. We're a way better dual meet team. We have a cadre of middle distance, we'll be pretty good but we have to contend with Capital. We have the biggest team we've ever had.

Newcomers: Zack Farino, switched from baseball, a multi-event athlete, sprints, jumps; Kyle Munn, shot, discus; Justin Byrd, shot, discus; both Munn and Byrd have shot at making it to state.

Coach's comments: "We have a very good bunch of freshmen, but they're not ready to impact. As good as we've had. But they're kids. We have 75 boys and 45 girls turning out. Justin George is going to be the cornerstone of our team. There's a lot of balance in the league. It's going to be pretty good. Timberline has some pretty good kids. It's a good league. Knights Give Classic Performance at Bremerton Relays

By Terry Mosher
Saturday, March 22, 2008

Steve Zugschwerdt | For The Kitsap Sun Bainbridge senior Cheyne Clark catches the bar trying to clear 14-feet, 6-inches in the pole vaulting event at the Bremerton Relays Saturday. Clark won the event after clearing 14 feet.

Steve Zugschwerdt | For The Kitsap Sun Cheyne Clark, a senior at Bainbridge, leaves the pole behind as he clears 14 feet to win the pole vaulting event at the Bremerton Relays Saturday.

Steve Zugschwerdt | For The Kitsap Sun Chris Flemming takes the baton from teammate Jamaree Wills in the 4x100 relay at the Bremerton Relays Saturday. The relay team of Wills, Flemming and Jamiere Abney and Alex Griffin posted the best time for the event at 43.8 seconds.

Steve Zugschwerdt | For The Kitsap Sun North Kitsap's Christine Parker and Bremerton's Stephanie Himmelsbach were nearly even as they cleared the last hurdle in the 100 meter race Saturday at the Bremerton Relays.

Last week at the Kitsap County Classic, Bremerton's 400-relay team was disqualified for a dropped baton, bringing back memories of state last year when the same thing happened. The four members had a week to stew about it and to work extensively on their handoffs.

Saturday at Bremerton Memorial Stadium, the foursome of Jamaree Wells, Chris Fleming, Jamiere Abney and Alex Griffin got their redemption. Wells gave his team a big lead on the first leg, Griffin stormed from five meters behind on the anchor leg and the Knights stormed to the best 3A state time and the third-best overall state time, a 43.8 while winning the 400-meters relay at the 10th annual Bremerton Relay Classic.

"We wanted to come in and show them that this was our relay," said Wells as he fought to catch his breath. "It's our house. We wanted to put on a good display so everybody knows Bremerton is here."

Bremerton coach Lloyd Pugh said, "I was impressed. We blew two exchanges last week. It was ugly."

Wells and Griffin have been running this event for the Knights since they were freshman, and had never won the 400 at this event. But Pugh said conditioning work has picked up this year and that has helped.

"They run the Ohio Street Hill (running alongside Bremerton Memorial Stadium) several times a day during the week," Pugh said. "They go from the water on up to the gate (at the stadium)."

Clearly the Ohio Street Hill Gang is for real because they also finished second to a powerful Bainbridge foursome in the 1,200 sprint relay and won the 800 relay.

Camas, located along the Columbia River in Clark County, won both the girls and boys team titles fairly easily, using its depth to run up points. South Kitsap's second place in boys and North Kitsap's third in girls were the best local efforts.

Spring weather around here isn't always so good for this type of event (it rained on it last year) and athletes like the Bainbridge Four — Austin Hallett, Ian Shiach, Anthony Carter and Kyle Szarcynski — took advantage of the weather break to blast to a winning time of 2:38.21 in the 1,200 sprint relay. Carter, Shiach, Hallett and Steven Vassiliadas then set a meet record and a state best time of 3:29.32 in the 1,600 relay.

While all this was going on, up on the plateau above the stadium this year's second-place finisher in the diving competition at the state 3A swim meet, Bainbridge senior Cheyne Clark, soared to a winning mark of 14 feet in the pole vault.

Clark has a personal best and school record he established last year in a meet in Seattle. This season, he's using a new pole that is 15 inches longer.

"Right now I'm struggling just to get to the mat," said Clark, who signed in November to dive for the Air Force Academy, where he hopes to become a pilot. "Once I figure how to get on top of (the pole), hopefully that PR will shoot up. I'm hoping to go 15-6, 16 (feet). With the short pole I'm running 60 feet and with the big pole I'm running from about 105. I'm stepping back 45 feet, which is a lot more momentum and once I get on top of that momentum it's going to shoot me straight up."

Bainbridge senior Emily Farrar, who has signed to run track at Washington State, won the 200 steeplechase, an event Pugh imported from his days as coach of South Kitsap when he ran the South Kitsap Invitational.

When she was done, as she fought to catch her breath, Farrar admitted the event, "was not pleasant. But it got easier as I got going."

Farrar is one of the state's top 1,600 runners and while she hopes to get down to 5:05 this year (she ran 5:11.0 a year ago), there are some top runners elsewhere, so it won't be easy to run off with a state title.

Four of her teammates — Silvia Stellmacher, Elizabeth Brackett, Kelly Crane and Maddy Sheldon — lowered their state best time in the 1,600 relay from 4:11.8 to 4:10.38, running away from the field.

But the foursome didn't get what they really wanted — ice cream.

Pat Logan, who retired from coaching track 16 years ago in La Canada, Calif., and came to Bainbridge Island to retire and be near family, is coaching the Spartans' distance runners. He told them he would buy them ice cream if they got under 4:10.

So no deal.

In some other notable performances, South Kitsap's Lindsey Porter won the pole vault at 10 feet, Klahowya's Sharon Cox went out to 16 feet in the long jump, Sequim's Anna LaBeaume threw the shot put 36-5, Sean Allison of SK flew the javelin 171-01, Kingston's Mike Ferrell and Nichols Kincaid of Sequim both went 20-9 in the long jump, Kingston's Aaron Bilbao pole-vaulted 13-6, and Kingston's all-around athlete, Jack Clearman, went 41-1 in the triple jump.

The Daily World

BREMERTON — Elma’s Christian Stark won the 110 high hurdles at the Bremerton Relays on Saturday.

Stark was clocked in 15.8 in one of the three individual events contested. He also ran a 2:09 in his first-ever attempt at the 800 meters as part of Elma’s boys distance medley team.

One of only two 2A schools at the meet, Elma finished eighth in the boys team standings.

Elma’s best showing in the relay events was a tie for third in the girls high jump. The Eagles were fourth in the girls 4x400 relay (their 4:19.9 time was a season best by nine seconds), fifth in the boys javelin and girls distance medley, girls discus and girls high jump.

In individual events, Elma’s Neil Madison was sixth in the 300 hurdles and Michael Vest sixth among 28 runners in the unfamiliar 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Elma’s Jordan Craig had the best throw of the day in the boys javelin (176-2). Brandi Thomas’ long jump of 16-1/4 was the third best mark in the event.

Eagle coach Dave Beeler also cited the performances of Todd Jackson, for an eight-second PR of 4:52 in the 1,600 meters, Kate Edam for a 2:33.1 time in her first-ever 800 meters and Tyson Sutten, who tied a PR of 5-8 in the boys high jump.

In contrast to recent conditions on the Harbor, the weather was sunny and warm in Bremerton.

“I was very happy with the way the kids came out and performed,â€

Hoquiam breezes by AHS
By Rick Anderson - The Daily World
Friday, March 21, 2008 11:05 AM PDT

KATHY QUIGG | THE DAILY WORLD Hoquiam hurdlers Nychele Carley, left, and Sara Hoiness take first and second respectively at a Hoquiam/Aberdeen track meet Thursday at Hoquiam.

Print Version | E-mail This Story

On a day when Sea Breeze Oval lived up to its reputation, so did Hoquiam’s top track performers.

The Grizzlies easily swept Aberdeen in an Evergreen 2A Conference dual opener Thursday at their home track. Hoquiam’s boys prevailed, 113-30, while the HHS girls rolled to a 105-38 triumph.

It was the first day of spring, but the meet was contested in the raw, windy weather that is common at the Hoquiam oval. Temperatures never rose about the mid-40s.

But, as both coaches pointed out afterwards, conditions could have been much worse. A driving downpour — with the rain literally coming in sideways — held off until the concluding set of relays.

“Up to the rainstorm, it was a a good meet,â€
