Prep notebook: King's rules the state

By Craig Smith

Seattle Times staff reporter

The news was so good and so unexpected that vice-principal Bob Ruhlman was suspicious.

"We thought someone was playing a trick," he said.

No trick. King's High School, a private Christian school in Shoreline, yesterday was named by Sports Illustrated as having the best athletic program in the state.

It was a competition that the school didn't know existed. The school is named in this week's issue, which features a list of top 25 national programs and then a "best" program in each state.

Long Beach Poly in California, which will send its football team to play Bellevue at Qwest Field on Sept. 16, was named No. 1 nationally.

"This is one of those things beyond our wildest dreams â€â€

And of course Pole Vault Power webmaster Becca Gillespy :P haha

"There are hundreds of excellent athletic programs throughout the state," King's athletic director Dan Blackmer said. "To somehow be picked as the No. 1 school is very humbling."

Coach Blackmer was the head track coach from the 1970s until a few years ago. He still helps coach the hurdlers. He is largely responsible for building the powerhouse track program that King's has today.

What color did they make your track? I don't think I have been by since they resurfaced a few years ago.

No offense Becca, because King's does have a great athletic program, but why did they pick a small school? King's can't match up to most of the 4A schools. I think Mead or Rainier Beach would have been a better choice.

I don't know what their criteria were.

Our track is black. I like how it's just Becca, Zack, and I commenting on this.
