Athletes Vault into 4th of July Event



This Fourth of July, Northwest Track and Field Development will host the

tenth annual Regional Beach Pole Vault Championships on Ruston Way.  The

competition will take place just west of the Les Davis Pier.


Athletes will compete to qualify for the North American Pole Vaulting

Championships (NAPVA), America's elite pole vault invitational meet that

invites North America's best pole-vaulters.  A chance to further qualify

for national competition is on the line.


One of the highlight competitors to look out for is Becky Holliday who is

a student attending the University of Oregon.  Becky is currently the
National Collegiate Record Holder and ranked 3rd in the nation jumping 14 feet 8
inches.


In terms of male competitors, from The Willamette Striders Pole Vault Club 
Matt Phillips will be endeavoring to jump higher than his best of 18 feet and 6
inches.
Another exciting upcoming star is Tommy Skipper who is the National High
School leader with a best jump of 17 feet 7 inches and is the defending National
Junior Champion will be competing for the top spot.


The Freedom Fair Regional Championships will include some of the best

American pole-vaulters, as well as high school, college age, and master

pole-vaulters from Washington, Oregon and Canada.  Competitors and the

audience will also be able to enjoy a spectacular day of entertainment at

the Freedom Fair.
