Wow! That's a big team of pole vaulters!

How did you get so many kids to try out?

How many pits do you have?

And how did you get 50% more girls than boys?

Congratulations on organizing such a good group of athletes!

Good luck!

Kirk

Pole vaulting is a big deal at my school. We have a rich tradition in producing good vaulters. Our HS school records are 17'01" for boys and 13'06.25" for girls. Our JH school records are 15'07" for boys and 12'02" for girls. My best boy this year has gone 15'09" and he's ranked number 5 on our wall of fame.

I teach at our middle school so I get the chance to recruit kids, starting in the 6th grade. One year I tried to be politically correct and just let them sign up if they wanted to vault and I had 84 7th grade boys and girls. Due to numbers I told them that we were going to have tryouts like American Idol...every week half of you are going home so you better show me what you got.

When we move our operation outside we have 2 pits but from November until after spring break we only have one. We have to plan our practices with precision to make sure everyone is accomodated. If you'll notice, there are only 2 boys above the 8th grade on my list. That's unusual for us but it cycles around. In 2012 I had more high school boys than I could fit in a meet and only one girl.

Morry is too modest to mention that he's an incredibly cool guy and easy to like, whether you are an athlete or parent.

Thanks, Wilson! I just love the kids and I love what I do. Not all of them will be great vaulters but we all have a great time trying to figure it out.
