USA All-Time Top Ten

Unread postby roger/over » Mon Dec 28, 2009 5:48 pm

On December 17, I posted indoor and outdoor lists of USA women who had vaulted 4.60m or better. When I thought a bit about what minimum mark would be equivalent for men's lists, I realized that a better format for both the men's and women's elite lists would be the all-time top ten, regardless of what the resulting minimum might be. I'll post those lists now. Any corrections would be appreciated.

Corrections to top ten lists:

kev44000 wrote that Joe Dial’s 5.69 national record should have been on the outdoor list. True, and I can’t offer any excuse for my sloppy work, since the beginning point for these lists was the USA progression and Dial’s 5.96 of 1987 was there, along with his 5.91 and 5.94 of that year and his first NR of 5.90 in 1986. His 5.96 remained the record until Scott Huffman’s 5.97, seven years later. A scramble through my waste-basket revealed that Dial’s 5.96 was included in my first two summaries, then unaccountably missing from the third and fourth. I guess that’s what can happen when the process consists of manually adding new, better marks to the top ten and scratching out the lesser ones. Somehow, Joe’s 5.96 was deleted when it shouldn’t have been. Next time, I’ll have to devise some computer-sorting strategy.

VTechVaulter wrote that Daniel Ryland should have been included in the indoor list, since he had had a 5.85 that equaled the 10th place in that list. I don’t feel quite so foolish about this error, since I depended for recent marks on the tilastopaja.com lists and Ryland’s vault was not included in the 2005 world list, where it would have been equal-second with Derek Miles and Denys Yurchenko that year. After VTV raised the question, I checked the Ryland bio on that site and surprisingly found his 5.85 there, recorded at Jonesboro on 24 July 2005.

Thanks, people, for your corrections!

Ryland 5.85 was included on outdoor list. Though, I wonder if it was actually achieved outdoors?

It was an indoor mark set during the outdoor season, that is probably why you missed it Roger :) When the results were submitted to Tilastopaja, they were probably not listed as indoors (when they should have been).

Tully's PR was 5.84m at UC Irvine and is still the stadium record. As you know DJ, we saw him jump many times there. Bubba

Seems like Kory Tarpening jumped something around 19' 3" or 5.87m sometime in the late 80's or early 90's at the National championships in Indianapolis? And also didn't Billy Payne jump around 19'2" at some point?
