The quick answer is "a lot."

In 2010, so far 15 have, in 2009 14 did indoors and 18 did outdoors (mostly the same people), in 2008-an Olympic year, USA had 25 outdoors...

If you want to get a better idea of just how many "a lot" is, head over to USATF.org and check out the "Top Lists" under the stats link. There are lists all the way back to 2000.
Whether you believe you can or cannot, you're right.

There's a Swedish site that has deep all-time lists...down to 5.55m for the men. I lost that bookmark a few PC's ago but I think it's still there. From memory, there was only about 300-350 men worldwide that had jumped 5.55 or better.

This is it ... Mirko Jalava's website. http://www.tilastopaja.org/ The "deep world all-time lists" are for members only, but the "World all-time top 30" lists are free.

Ferenc Salbert? I've never even heard of him. He jumped 6.02? I hate that "exhibition" junk. Like Jeff Hartwig and his 6.02 indoor jump (i think it was 6.02). They don't count it as the official american indoor record because it was done at a mall  I'm pretty sure it was USATF certified and that should count, regardless. Any other secret 6m vaulters?? -6P

6P, I don't think you were born in 1987 when Salbert jumped 6.02. Don't feel bad ... I never heard of him either. And I think this was an outdoors-only list, which is why you see Bubka at 6.14, and why you don't see Hartwig's 6.02.

This list has Lavillenie's 6.01 from 2009, so I think it covers the Top 29 OUTDOOR Men's vaults ... no more "secret" 6m vaulters! Mirko probably didn't list 30th place becuz of too many ties at 5.90. :)

But we're getting off topic ... my post was mainly intended to provide a link to Mirko's website. The topic is "American vaulters over 5.50m". If you have a membership to Mirko's deep world list, then you can count the Americans over 5.50 ... or at least over 5.55. ;)

Salbert was a legit 5.90 vaulter back in the 80s. His 6.02 was either at a beach vault or the Eiffel Tower vault and was downhill.

Kirk, thanks for playing but Tilastopaja is Finnish. I haven't been a subscriber in over 5 years but at that time his lists didn't go that deep.

I found it...http://www.alltime-athletics.com/men.htm.

He's changed the format so the lists only go to 5.70 now but includes every vault that high that has ever occurred.

It includes: outdoor, indoor, ancillary jumps - en route to final marks, ancillary jumps indoors- en route to final marks, jump offs, jump off - indoors, jump off - ancillary jumps - en route to final marks

Feel free to email him. He may have lists that go to 5.50 but just doesn't publish them.

According to that site, Bubka cleared 6 meters or better in competition, 46 times; two of which were en route to what i'm sure were WR's...ming. -6P
