Sisters dominate pole vault at Classic

Before they flew over the pole vault bar, Caitlin and Molly Clancy vaulted as gymnasts.
The skill set of acrobatics, speed and agility learned in the gym, translated well to the pole vault pit for the sisters on the Canyon del Oro High School track team.
Two of the area's top vaulters, the Clancy sisters on Friday continued to fulfill their singular goal this track season: first and second place.
Senior Caitlin was first and junior Molly second in the pole vault competition at the Willie Williams Classic meet at Drachman Stadium.
"Pretty much our big goal this season is to get first and second every meet," Caitlin, 18, said. "It's really fun to be a vaulter and at this meet there's so much competition and so many athletes you never know what will happen."
The 1,300 high school track and field athletes at the Williams Classic combined with 400 collegiate competitors make the two-day meet the largest that Tucson hosts this outdoor track season.
The Clancy sisters beat a field of 16 other participants in the pole vault. Caitlin cleared 11 feet 6 inches, and Molly had a personal best of 10-9.
"The wind really wasn't a factor. It was about concentration and focus today," Molly said. "There was so much adrenaline."
That energy carried over into other events for the Clancys. Molly ran the 300-meter hurdles and Caitlin high jumped. Today, they will participate in the long jump and triple jump, respectively.
"It's really fun for them to pole vault together. They are so close and competitive," said their mother, Pat Trainor.
As a mom, Trainor said she was not concerned about safety when Caitlin began pole vaulting over three years ago because of the coaching supervision and her gymnastics background.
"Now she's vaulting with the boys," Trainor said. The 5-10 Caitlin's winning vault would have placed her eighth in the boys event, which included 20 vaulters.
Ironwood Ridge's Colin Witter-Tilton won the event with a vault of 14-6.
Other area athletes who placed in the top two in event finals on Friday included CDO's Jamie Minor in the girls long jump (17-6). Eshaunna Robinson and Kelsey Jessup placed first and second in the girls discus with throws of 121 feet and 109-3, respectively. Bridgette Gilliland of Sabino won the girls high jump (5-0). The 1,600 and 800 were the only running-event finals in the high school division Friday.
Rincon/University's Ashley Chrico won the 1,600 with a time of 5 minutes 22.33 seconds. The girls 800 was won by Electine Orido of Sahuaro (2:23.02). Bryce Livingston ran 4:24.89 for the 1,600 victory. In the 800, Tucson High's Jay Martinez was first in 2 minutes even, followed by Livingston (2:00.57).
Today's high school events begin at 8:30 a.m. Collegiate field events begin at 9 and running events start at noon.
The meet is one of seven the University of Arizona will host this season and includes teams from Brigham Young, Central Arizona, New Mexico State, Utah State and Washington State.
