Pulling after takeoff

Unread postby yankee814 » Sun Apr 19, 2009 6:09 pm

After I plant the pole and it begins to bend, instead of my bottom arm collapsing, I begin to pull instead. I've read other threads and found that this stops the momentum of the pole and hurts my swing as well.

Anyone have any advice on how to fix this?

Are you pulling with your bottom arm or top arm?

I have a strange suggestion...

In addition to doing stiff pole work in the sand, try swinging Bubkas. They are typically not great for technique, but it seems to have helped with my pulling issues... I think you'll find that you struggle to do them without pulling! Once you can do it on the bar, it should be easier to do on the pole.

Use "push/squeeze" as a mental queue to keep your arms extended while doing stiff pole Jagodins in the sand and when you're really vaulting.

I'm currently doing swinging bubkas as a part of my high bar routine that I do about 3-4 times a week.

So I'll continue with those, got any others?

I'd suggest filming them for us to see... Are you sure you're not muscling those with your arms at all?

I'm not positive but I don't think so. I just emphasize a straight trail leg, I'll start paying more attention to not using my arms
