how should you utilize the force fromyour body to move the pole upwards and forwards continously throughout the vault. How should you move/position your body to ensure the poles movesthe directions it is suppose to? use of arms? chest? legs?

jump up and punch your arms straight up, then try and throw the pole in front of you after you takeoff. it's more something you feel.

I. CONCEPTS IN POLE VAULTING:
A. DOUBLE PENDULUM
1. VAULTER SWINGING FROM THE TOP HAND
2. POLE AND VAULTER PIVOT ABOUT THE BASE OF THE POLE
B. ANGLE OF POLE AT TAKEOFF
1. TOP OF POLE AS HIGH AS POSSIBLE (INCREASE ANGLE OF POLE)
a. IMPROVES POLE SPEED
b. POLE BENDS EASIER
c. VAULTER PENETRATES EASIER
d. LESS DISTANCE FOR POLE TO TRAVEL TO VERTICAL
*****C. POLE SPEED
1. TOP OF POLE MUST MOVE FORWARD AND UPWARD QUICKLY
2. METRONOME CONCEPT (weight away from the top of the lever increases lever speed)
D. TRUE LINE CONCEPT (TOP HAND TO BUTT END OF POLE)
1. CENTER OF MASS MUST BE KEPT AS FAR AWAY FROM TOP HAND AS POSSIBLE DURING TAKE OFF AND FOLLOW THROUGH (PENETRATION) PHASES. CENTER OF MASS MUST STAY BEHIND THE TRUE (STRAIGHT) LINE OF THE POLE (CORD) UNTIL STRAIGHT LINE REACHES 45 DEGREE ANGLE.
2. ANY OF THE FOLLOWING (OR A COMBINATION) DECREASES POLE SPEED AND WILL CAUSE THE VAULTER
TO "GET AHEAD OF THE POLE; THIS CAUSES STALL OUTS!!!
a. holding too high
b. slowing down through the take off
c. a late / low plant
d. take off foot "too far under--or too far out"
e. pulling with the top arm---pushing with the bottom arm
f. "rocking back" off the take off---throwing head back
g. trying to invert too soon

UNFORTUNATELY WE SEE VAULTERS DO ALL THE ABOVE IN ONE SINGLE JUMP.

This is the beginners forum, so i'll give you two simple tips. But the truth is, that is a loaded question. If you figured out how to keep moving the pole toward vertical, as you increase the length and stiffness of the pole, you have figured out the fundamental problem of pole vaulting. Here's two ways:

1.) Hands pressed up with a high take off angle

2.) Leave the ground a split second before the pole tip makes contact with the box

To find out more about these tips, check out the intermediate/advanced forums and search "Free Take off" and "Hand movement".
The greater the challenge, the more glorious the triumph
