Teaching Pull/Push and Turn is next

Hi Guys,

I'm helping my 7th grade daughter learn correct vaulting technique. We've successfully covered run up, plant, free take off beneath top hand, and a spring and swing. It's now time to learn to pull up and start turning over.

Does anyone have an effective drill to help a beginner girl get this - while not messing up the previous skills?

Thanks,
P Searby

Honestly, I wouldn't place too much emphasis on it for a beginner. The focus needs to be on mastering a good run and takeoff, because without them you'll have a difficult time with the swing and turn.

I am personally a fan of sand vaulting over a bungee stretched across two hurdles.

I also recommend checking out the book "Beginner to Bubka" it has a ton of drills and advice for coaching beginners. I sell it in the PV Power store :)

OK thanks. I already have the book. I've read through all of the presentation and justification of Petrov's technique and the myths of flexible pole "techniques". I'll look up the drills next. And I'll look for the sand pit ones too.

Any other ideas?

Just have fun! She is young and has a lot of time ahead of her. Don't worry about the heights she is clearing at this point :)

I've seen a lot of girls who can turn in the beginning, then go over backwards as they start swinging more, then start turning again as they continue to improve. I'm not saying that's ideal, but don't lose sleep over the turn. Continue to focus on the mechanics of a good run and takeoff, and the rest will take care of itself over time.

Hannah's having a great time vaulting. She tied the district record of 7'6" for 7th grade girls yesterday. Here's her final attempt at 8'0". Sooo close.
