Oldest/Youngest on 2009 Outdoor World List

Unread postby roger/over » Wed Dec 09, 2009 7:54 pm

With almost no indoor results so far, my thoughts turned to Stacy's retirement and, from there, to wondering whether she was the oldest vaulter to make Mirko Jalava's world list in her final outdoor season. Mirko's lists <tilastopaja.org> are by far the most comprehensive summaries of performances by top track and field athletes. For the 2009 outdoor season, he shows marks by 655 women vaulting over 3.60 meters and 529 men vaulting over 5.00 meters. In the following summaries, I have the top ten vaulters in each category ranked by age. The first number for each vaulter is his or her rank on the 2009 outdoor list. As you can see, I found Stacy to be only the second-oldest on the women's list, but she earned, by far, the highest ranking in the top ten.

Just one to add on to that list from Australia:

Paris McCathrion (turned 14 years old in 2009 - don't know exact DOB) jumped a new PR of 3.80m last week. She's training with Mark Stewart in Melbourne so this is going to be one to look out for! I'll update my post later when I have more details, though I believe she improved from 3.30m last year when she started training with Mark.

Warren Hill says, "Paris McCathrion is coached by Julian Shuravetsky not Mark Stewart"

Mel Mueller 4.11 on 6/20/09 at queen creek AZ for some reason this mark is listed under men on the link for masters marks off the USATF website.

Hmmm... I heard she switched over to Mark a little while ago. Never mind then, Warren is actually from Melbourne so he'd know more than me.

On Dec 10, Robert Schmitt wrote that Mel Mueller had 4.11m in 2009. Since I had not recorded a height for her since her PR 4.60 in 2003, asked Mirko Jalava <tilastopaja.net> if he could find the meet in any of his many sources. Fourteen (!) minutes later, at about midnight Helsinki time, he replied with the Arizona Pole Vault Academy website, showing Mueller’s three competitions this summer. Two of these were mixed-gender and might not be acceptable for records purposes, but her 4.11 was accomplished in a women-only contest on June 20th. I’ll add this to my “oldest vaulters of 2009” list.

Having noted Mel’s PR 4.60 caused me to wonder how many American women had ever cleared this height or higher, and I had already started assembling a rank-order list of outdoor marks that met this criterion. Then, wondering whether any vaulters not on that list might have cleared 4.60 or better indoors required that I search through this data, too.

I’ll post both the outdoor and indoor lists that resulted, but since I considered only American women, I’ll move to Becca’s USA Elite forum for this posting.
