Malte Mohr 5.83 in Dessau

From the European athletics (http://www.european-athletics.org)

German pole vaulter Malte Mohr continued his outstanding winter with a clearance of 5.83m on home soil at the Jumps Meeting in Dessau on Wednesday, the second best performance of the year.

The 2010 World Indoor Championships silver medallist got over his winning height, which also equalled his indoor best which he jumped in Leipzig last year, with his third attempt afterwards tried what would have been a German record of 6.01m.

“I have a six-metre jump as my target for the winter,” said Mohr.

He has now won three of his four competitions this winter, his only defeat coming in Chemnitz last week, when he lost to France’s Renaud Lavillenie, and the stage appears set for a wonderful duel between the pair at the European Athletics Indoor Championships next month.

The 2011 European Athletics Indoor Championships will be held in the French capital Paris at the Palais Omnisport Paris-Bercy from 4-6 March.

“It would be nice to snatch the title from him (Lavillenie) on his home ground,” joked Mohr in Dessau, laying down the gauntlet but without too much malice.

Lavillenie, who is unbeaten this winter, leads the 2011 world rankings with the 5.92m he cleared in Aubière, France, last month and it is a distinct possibility that he and Mohr might challenge the Championships best performance of 5.90m, which was achieved by the Russian pair of Piotr Bochkarev and Igor Pavlov in 1994 and 2005 respectively.

The Frenchman is the defending European indoor champion, having won with 5.81m in Torino, Italy, two years ago.

Four other men cleared 5.60m in Dessau but could go no higher. Ukraine’s Maksim Mazuryk finished second and the next two places were occupied by the German duo of Tim Lobinger and Bjorn Otto with fifth place going to the Czech vaulter Michal Balner; the quartet being separated by the number of failures during the competition.
