Not a terribly exciting topic, but I was curious how tall and heavy vaulters could be and still make the world list. You might be, too.
Biggest of the men, in both height and weight, was Jeremy Scott of the USA, ranked #28 at 5.55m. Jeremy is 208cm x 91kg. That's huge: 6'9" x 200 lbs.
Top vaulter for the year, (6.05) Renaud Lavillinie of France, is 176cm (5'9 1/4") x 85 (187 lbs)
When Sergei Bubka set the current world indoor record of 6.15 in 1993, he was 183 (6') x 80 (176 lbs).
Biggest female vaulter, both in height and weight, was Li Ling of China (#103 at 4.15m). She was 184 (6' 1/2") x 65 (143 lbs.)
World Leader (4.85m) Jenn Suhr, only a centimeter shorter than Li Ling, weighed two kilograms less (138.6 lbs.)
World record holder Yelena Isinbayeva, who didn't vault this year, is 170 (5'7") x 59 (130 lbs.)
Thanks for this info goes entirely to Mirko Jalava <tilastopaja.net>, whose world list website is the only one I know that provides full birthdate, height, weight, and meet placing.
BTW--I must apologize for misspelling Michel Saint-Raymond's last name ("Saint-Roman") in crediting his contributions to my list of new national records I published a few days ago.

Lavillenie is definitely lighter than that. At least he was last year. I'm pretty sure he's in the 150-160 range. I'm going to see if I can find something on his blog or youtube page.

Re: Biggest Indoor Vaulters
I am pretty sure all of those are wrong. Renaude may be 160 at the most, Bubka when he was jumping high was 180ish, and the weight for those girls are all way too light! Jenn and Isi are pretty buff girls (and tall), there is no way either of them are in the 130's.

Renaud Lavillenie is about 151lbs. I believe the height given by Roger/Over is correct.
I would also believe Bubka was at that weight, at least for a significant portion of his career. I know in one of his interviews he talks about being afraid to gain weight because he was worried he'd be too heavy for his poles. I believe the 6m club chart has him at about 175.
I don't know about the girls, but based on what Isi said about her diet, I would not be surprised if she was very light for her height. I don't know about Jenn though, I agree with Kyle, she's pretty buff.

good morning
those numbers are reasonable... i don't think Renaud Lavillenie is that heavy and Bubka was listed at 168 in the world rankings...
Tully was 6-4/191 at the usa Trials and 6-4/196 at the Games
i did some studies.. abd developed a "formula"
1.9 lbs per inch in height for women and 2.25 lbs per inch in height for men...
this was based on averages height and weight and the fact than women have more body fat (in general) which means they have a smaller propotion of muscle to move the mass........

Re: Biggest Indoor Vaulters
I think your formula only works for guys 6' and under...
That would put a guy that is 6'3 at 169lb. That is not feasible or anywhere near healthy. One of the guy I am coaching is 6'3 175 and he looks like a tooth pick. And when his body fat was tested it was at about 7%. I think when you have a certain amount of bone, you need to have a little more muscle to be able to move that much body at the same high speed as the smaller pole vaulters.
If you take a smaller guy like Greg Duplantis who was about 66in tall and 150lb (which is kind of bulky looking for a 5'6 guy) he would be 2.27 lb/in. While a 6'9 guy who is 2.27 lb/in would be 184 lb and would look very unhealthily skinny.
I just do not think this comparison is linear.

good morning,
if you put the mens number at 2.5... 6-4 = 190...... 6'=180
when i "played" with the data, which i don't have here in front of me, the main purpose was in selecting young talent...
Earl was 6-2/6-3 and 155... his sophmore year in college i think he went to 167 with a strong lifting program...
gotta run..

Some typos
>>>Top vaulter for the year, (6.05) Renaud Lavillinie of France
He jumped 6,03, not 6,05, and his name is Lavillénie

What?!?! One of my athletes, Andrew Irwin, is 6'3" 165ish (weighed 163 at indoor state) and looks like an athlete. I'de like to have about a dozen more built just like him!

Re: Biggest Indoor Vaulters
The question is whether putting on more muscle weight in the legs will make you fast(er) enough to overcome the relative upper body strength loss. So if it makes you a lot more explosive, basically, it SHOULD help. I wouldn't be surprised to see Andrew at 170-175 by the end of college. I also wouldn't be terribly surprised to see that make him a little faster, little more explosive, and get him over some 5.60+ bars!!
It's an interesting question, though. I'm 5'9" 157-160 and I can barely knick a basketball rim, and can run a 60m dash in around 7.1-7.2. This summer, I personally think i need to gain more relative explosiveness, by either losing weight or gaining strength/explosiveness, or both. I wonder if we could figure out what we feel an ideal BMI would be for vaulters? Obviously the lower body fat % the better, so if we assume a 4-6% body fat, what do you think the ideal BMI would be?
BTW Morry, what is the date for your hall of fame induction? I want to come
