In Japanese, Pole vault is Bo Taka Tobe. (sp?) Bo means stick, and one of them means jump, thats all I know.

Swedish: Stavhopp means pole jump. Stavhoppare = Pole Vaulter

In Polish it's: skok o tyczce whicz literally means: jump with the help of a pole The connection between pole and Pole(Polish) does not exists in our language.

OK that did not copy and paste properly, but it is "skok o tyci" with a a v-shaped thing over the "c"

My "Character Map" applet calls the v-shaped thing a "caron". So how does a C with a caron sound different from one without?

In most Slavic languages the caron works like this...
s (with caron) is like sh - shark
c with caron is like ch -chalk. C without it is often like "ts"
z with caron is like zhe like the French Jacque
And in Russian you get a really special one that is shch like the middle sound in orangejuice.

Croatian: "skok s motkom" or "skok motkom", not sure what is official now)
Serbian, Bosnian: skok s motkom
Both means jump with pole.
This one is the best:
Bulgarian: Овчарски скок (it means shepard's jump

in arabic its : القفز بالزانة and it means jump with the pole!
