Its not too short, of course. If you make up with it with form, speed, and pure athleticism than no its not too short. But take that same 5'9 hurdler and find a 6'2 hurdler with the same raw talent, just 5 inches taller, and the 6'2 guy will win. Its proven every day that "disadvantaged" short people can be champions, but its also proven biomechanically that being taller poses quite a few advantages as well.

Haha, I figured the taller the better...I have a friend who's like 6'3" and he's a fantastic hurdler...incidentally, he's also a high/long jumper :P

I'm only 5'6", but I guess that's around average for girls?

Thats above average. I think the average hieght for girls is 5'4". Heres a cool link:

Im assuming you are caucasian by giving this link. The data varies with different ethnicities, apparently.

I wish i could say i was 5'9!.... i consider short under 5'8.... Yes It is true that the taller person has the advantage but if the short guy puts in the training anythins possible. Ive pole vaulted with a guy thats 5'7 and he jumped 17' in college an im 5'5 jumping 13 at the beginning of my second season. There was also a guy on my track team that was 5'4 an ran the 300m hurdles in 42 in one of his first meets.

And Napoleon Bonaparte was short, so what :-)
Bubka is not so tall (6ft).
Here are couple of short guys:
name height (m) height (ft) PB (m) PB (ft)
Fábio Gomes Da Silva 1.77 5' 09 3/4" 5.77 18' 11"
Aleksandr Averbukh 1.78 5' 10" 5.93 19' 05 1/2"
Dimitry Markov 1.81 5' 11 1/4" 6.05 19' 10 1/4"
Paul Burgess 1.83 6' 00" 6.00 19' 08 1/4"
Sergei Bubka 1.83 6' 00" 6.15 20' 02"

Obviously it can be done. But looking at computer models and technically perfect execution of the vault, a vaulter between 6' and 6'3 with all things considered (take off angle, plant hieght, swing velocity, run velocity and force, etc) has a higher vault than someone who is 5'9. However, the difference small and could easily be changed by executing the vault better, being faster, and taking advantage of what you have. For example, generally shorter people are more agile and gymnastic, and could lose less energy in the execution of their vault. But yea, generally, 6'-6'3 is the "perfect" vaulting hieght.

Since Bubka has been unmatched for a while now and he was only 6'00", shouldn't that mean that he was the perfect height and anyone under 6'00" is too short and anyone over 6'00" is too tall. So in my self proclamed theory a 5'9 vaulter has the same height capability as a 6'3 vaulter...HAHA bet not too many people would ever think 6'3 would be 'too' tall for pole vault...but then again is most probabable that once you reach a certain point, progress is mostly dependent on work ethic and height plays little into it...

Height helps but thats no reason not to run hurdles. I was 5'6" in high school and ran in the 16s, and thats in cold and rainy Ohio. It most definitely helps vaulting with body awareness as well as endurance.
What is nice about this sport is that I am responsible for most everything.

I liked counting my lefts to the first hurdle. It always took 4 lefts and I ran mid 15 (college high). It was a great carryover for when I learned how to vault because it helped with my speed at the end of the run, 4..3..2..jump! I used it in vault, LJ, TJ, and hurdles to the first hurdle.
Set your goals high, and don't stop till you get there.
