Detmer named Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS – Joe Detmer has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after setting the double decathlon world record over the weekend at the 2010 World Championships for Ultra Multi Events, hosted by Liberty University at the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex in Lynchburg, Va.
A former All-American from Wisconsin, Detmer tallied 14,571 points in 20 events, shattering Kip Janvrin's world double decathlon record by 386 points. Janvrin, a 2000 U.S. Olympian in the decathlon, had set the mark of 14,185 at the 2002 World Championships in Finland.

Detmer opened the competition Friday morning, clocking 10.93 seconds for the 100-meter dash and long jumping 23-11.5. Both marks were the best ever posted in a double decathlon. Some of Detmer's other exceptional performances included a 2:02.23 in the 800, a 6-6 high jump, a 50.43 in the 400, a 15-11 pole vault, a 53.83 in the 400 hurdles and a 4:26.66 in the 1,500.

Detmer also set a world record for the highest decathlon score ever posted as part of a double decathlon competition. He racked up an incredible 7,741 points in the 10 traditional decathlon disciplines on Friday and Saturday.

Ok.. so the guy nearly tied his pole vault PR (4.85 vs 4.91) after 13 other events, 9 of which required running, and included a 5000, 3000 steeple chase, 800, 400, 200, 200 hurdles, 110 hurdles, and 100 meter dash!

Also note had he tied his PR in the 400 and 1500, he would have nearly tied his overall decathlon record. (He had a discus PR that day).

This has to be one of the greatest athletic feats of all time!

Good morning,

This is absolutely astounding!!!

I’ve done a one day Decathlon and Toomey and some of those guys would do one hour decathlon’s (which have records some where) but how many events? and in what time frame???

Detmer you have my respect from any sport, ANY athlete, ANY where… I could have used 2 of you on my football team this year…. ; )

One hour deca is all events in one hour You obviously limit the number of attempts in the field events.

That actually makes sense that a guy like Detmer would do well in this. He's always been unusually strong in the longer events for a decathlete, and a double decathlon adds a LOT of distance events... plus the overall fitness you need to do 20 events in two days!

Too bad there's not major sponsors behind this. He deserves money for that performance!

VP: from what I remember, they were going straight from one event to the next without any real rest. Since there's only a few double-dec's here and there, there around 30 athletes, i think , from the ages 12-76 or something like that. So I suppose the rest was in between heats but that was about it. My former coach competed and I think he start at 8 or 9 am on day two and finished around 5 or 6. so 10 events for 30 athletes in 8-9 hours. -6P
