I was talking to a coach that said that they thought they weren't going to count this year even though they have in the past! I think they are still trying to decide.
That's Jodie!!

As far as I know Reno counted. Why wouldn't it? They even used legit standards and crossbars, unlike most of the other meets right now.

Go to I think www.trackwire.com and sign up for their email newletter and you will get rankings.

As of right now NCAA won't count it as a meet because the criteria for a meet is 18 events or scored. So yeah i qualified there and it don't count.

I suppose they could have had it be a USATF Sanctioned Meet and then they should have counted. The small Vault Carnival in Chicago this weekend is going that route

reno will not count this year for division 1 but i dont know about the others.
and as far as being USATF sanctioned, that doesn't matter because all of our meets at Bell Athletics are not counted by the NCAA but they are all USATF sanctioned, there has to be a certain number of events held

So how did this come about this year? Reno has always counted in the past, right?

If it stays like that, I can see a lot less colleges going. What head coach is going to want to pay that much money to send his vaulters to a meet that does not count? If it were outdoors it would be less of a problem because of the new qualifying, but indoors, most everyone is trying every week to improve their qualifying marks.

OK I have been asking around... this is what I hear

Tom Borish (the guy who does www.trackshark.com) sent this to me, from Geoff Thumer, an athlete at Oregon

according to our coaches, they said that the ncaa track and field committee
made a decision last summer not to grant the usatf pole vault summit a
waiver this year (since it's a one-event only competition, and doesn't have
the ncaa sanctioned-# of events in its schedule)

the problem was, most if not all the collegiate coaches didn't know that
the decision was made from above (and our coaches never saw it in any of
the preseason rules/regulations mailings), so the coaches found out after
the fact that they wasted their money going there for ncaa qualifying
purposes (and i'm not sure how cheap it is to fly to reno, either)

Seems like in the old days back at the rodeo arena, they also held a track meet the same weekend so that marks would count. The Bill Cosby track was set up and a meet went on in conjunction with the summit. Of course with the number of vaulters at the summit now that would be a bit much. I am sorry those marks don't count for NCAA, but from what I was blessed to watch there, I bet those who cleared them in Reno, clear 'em again.
compete and jump safe, have fun

Ridiculous

Unread postby VaultnGus » Wed Jan 29, 2003 9:59 pm

After looking at the NCAA lists they have indeed rejected all marks for DI and DII athletes but it looks as if the DIII athletes WERE allowed to submit their Reno marks (Jeremy Scott, Enrique Abundiz, Matt Sheehan & Keenan King).

The idea to not allow marks is stupidity phase one. To then allow DIII athletes to use them while saying no the DI and DII athletes is just bloody AWFUL

here's the affected parties as far as I can see :

--- DI ---
Paul Litchfield Idaho State 5.50 18'00.50"
Brad Walker Washington 5.40 17'08.50"
Jeremy Hull Kansas 5.30 17'04.50"
Niki McEwen Oregon 4.30 14'01.25"
Amy Linnen Arizona 4.20 13'09.25"
April Steiner Arkansas 4.20 13'09.25"
Chelsea Johnson UCLA 3.95 12'11.50"
Fanni Juhasz Georgia 3.95 12'11.50"
Kate Soma Washington 3.95 12'11.50"
Gail Larsen UCLA 3.90 12'09.50"
Jamie Kolar UCLA 3.90 12'09.50"
Kristen Riley Oregon 3.90 12'09.50"

--- DII ---
Chris Turner Missouri Southern 4.90 16'00.75"

I think quite a few of those West Coast vaulters will be getting their qualifiers this weekend at UW.
