Toughest year I can remember. 4 guys over 16 feet. 4 guys over 15 ft. Illinois pole vaulting is on the rise. This improvement is largely due to improved coaching in High School, and good support systems outside of the school itself.

Several coaches in the chicagoland area are former collegiate vaulters who competed at the 16 plus level in college. They are doing what I always hoped they would do. They are giving something back to the sport of pole vaulting. They do this not for money or anything like that. They do it for the joy and satifcation of watching kids get better. Lincoln Way Central and Plainfield South are just a couple of the High Schools who have outstanding vault coaches in the Chicagoland area. There are too many to list them all.

In Illinois there are several opportunities for athletes to train during the summer, Fall and Winter, up to the start of the season. This increased opportunity to vault and train is also responsible for the improvments in quality performance over the past several years. There is no substitute for repetitions.

Yeah, Illinois is on the rise. When I competed, 15 feet one the meet. I'm one of those collegiate vaulters that are giving back. I'll probably be coaching at University of Chicago next year, so I'm looking forward to that. In the mean time, at Maine South on Thursday nights we'll be jumping. If you're in the area, stop on by. It starts June 7th I think.
