When He made 19'7" he was gripping 15'10" on a 17'4" 200. He looked like a rag doll getting shot out of a cannon. I may have a film of him winning the 87 USATF championships on that pole. If I can find it, I'll post it. :)

Is the key to a bigger pushoff strength? or the energy released from the pole as it unbends?

I’m not really interested in getting into a technical discussion because semantics and terminology sometimes overlap so that sometimes we’re saying the same thing but using different keywords. This actually happens a lot which is cool. But I will relate this story.

In 1994 at Reno, Vitaly Petrov was asked what he thought were the areas to find the most improvement for potential. He was asked about equipment, training methods, etc. His answer was the athlete’s ability to shorten the duration of the swing (from start to finish) because that gave the greatest opportunity to add power. In Beginner to Bubka the language is “cover the handsâ€Â

Thanks AVC Coach, but I think the other guys said it better - SWING!!!

Here's a great example. Remember when you first got on a pole that felt pretty big that you made the height but the pole felt quick and you almost came down on it? The next height the pole felt pretty good. Now the next height you blew through. It’s because you swung faster and further in one motion.

I’ve also had athletes tell me, “if I would have turned up for the bar I would have broken the poleâ€Â

Bubba is the man! I enjoyed reading that, that was great. I would assume that it s core strength that helps you swing. But I don't really know. All I know is swing hard and let it happen

A "perfect" pushoff is the result of a good rowing of the left arm down the chord of the pole AND a powerful swing, which is the result of an active takeoff foot and high plant, which is the result of an out takeoff, which is the result of a powerful and quick last few steps, which is the result of a good run, which is the result of lotsa practice.

So ya see, Practice makes perfect.

...and genetics help too.
