Video review - two young vaulters

Unread postby Aggietom » Thu Feb 14, 2013 12:46 am

These girls are part-time vaulters. They were clearing between 6' and 7' their first week of the season last year. This is where they're at now.

I have some ideas of what they're doing wrong, but I wouldn't mind hearing what others see right off the bat.

TIA

Vaulter 1:

1. Narrow the grip
2. She is planting late. Practice slow motion plant drills - Start the plant as the left foot strikes >> Right hand reaches forehead as right foot strikes >> full extension the instant before the takeoff foot strikes
3. She is planting with the left arm very low, just in front of her face. The left arm should be extended overhead with space to allow the left hand to move back over the head.
4. As a result of her plant position, she has no room to swing and must pull. Teach her not to pull, but instead to stretch up and swing from the top hand.

Vaulter 2:

1. The big one is plant motion. She needs to learn to plant in 3 steps instead of 5. When she does that she'll easily hold a fist or two higher.
2. As with the first vaulter, her left arm is not extending at the plant position. this will be fixed with plant drills.
3. After her plant motion is corrected, she can be told to resist upward against the pole.

Thanks. We've been trying to emphasize the high plant. It is a work in progress with everyone. The biggest thing I've noticed is the bottom hand being in front of the face. They're getting better, but it is day to day.

Vaulter #1 also draws her top hand behind her right before she flips the pole. I wondered if that was leading to other problems. It appears to go about a foot behind her hips.

#2 had been planting late. This is a bit of an overcorrection. And is very drawn out.

Thanks for the thoughts. Appreciate it.
