Pole Vault History

Unread postby Oldcoach » Fri Jun 27, 2003 12:42 pm

Since things are a little slow right now in the vault world- How about a little history test?
Name the first person to vault
15 ft
16 ft
17 ft
18 ft
19 ft
20 ft
This is not "open book-open notes" --so don't look it up somewhere on the net- take your best shot from memory- It's my test so I can dictate the rules- just like school.

I will post the answers Saturday evening
Good Luck- Maybe Becca will give the winner a prize

15 - Warmerdam
16 - Bragg
17 - Pennel
18 - Popanocoiu (sp?)
19 - Vigneron
20 - Bubka

Not sure about Bragg. And I didn't cheat. How'd I do?

I think you were pretty close! Only one I think may be wrong is the first person to clear 16. To my knowledge Bragg never made 16, it was............dangit. Some guy from Rice University. Somebodies got to know that one. But it aint me.

I knew that....Fred Hansen. Dangit. Then it must be Bob Gutowski. He cleared 15'10 on steel, so he would be the next candidate I could think of.

George Davies was the first to break it on fiberglass. I knew it was not Brag, but couldn't think of anyone else.

Funny thing about Davies:
The pole he used was in the trophy cabinet at Oklahoma State. I don't think a 002 plug would even come close to fitting that mandril! He broke his ankle on the WR jump in Boulder. It was 1960. No national championship. No olympics. Just the WR. Weird, huh?

Barto,
Your're right about Davies- not Gutowski as the first WR on Fiberglass. But the the first 16 footer is still another man---.

*sigh* alright, there may be some controversy over 12 feet...my source says one thing, with a quote from a newspaper that year to back it up, but another source says something else...so...i'll accept either...cuz i really have no way to tell which one, or possibly both (the second is a list, and maybe they just missed the person from the first somehow) is accurate...
