It may seem hard to belive, but George Mattos cleared 15' in 1960 at Modesto. He was gripping 12' and had a 42" push.
He was just inducted to the Pole Vault Summit hall of fame.

I don't think I believe a single claim on here.
How can earl bell jump high gripping 11'3? Earl is what 6'3 -6'4?
And some guy pushing off 42 inches straight poling? That is equal to Bubka's push-off on fiberglass??

The thing is that vertical speed dictates push-off, so to push off that high you would need a good amount of horizontal speed coming in. So if you are running in that fast how would you grip that low?? especially if you are 6'3 or 6'4???

I had a kid this year grip 11'3 and clear a 12ft bar from 3 lefts straight pole vaulting, I thought that was impressive.

Also I heard of Bubka clearing 14ft from 3lefts, I imagine he was gripping 13 to 13'4. And i have seen Colwick make 13 ft, but gripping probably around 12ft.

Mr Ellis

I didn't see Geoge's 15" vault but I saw him clear 14' 10" several times. Ivaulted against him in 1960 and he was known in the vaulting world for having the greatest push of all time.
I wish I could find some video of him, but even he doesn't know of any still existing.

Here is some video of Bob Gutowski in 1957 vaulting 15' 8". If you don't belive steel pole vaulters could get that much push, you tell me how much he is pushing.

The pole was probably 16 feet made out of swedish steel or aluminum...the pole passed under 15-8 so it appears he may have gripped around 13..

I would say that guy is gripping 12'8 to 13, which is pretty sick. And obviously this was from a full run, I still don't understand how earl could grip so low and push off so high...... Would it be safe to say that fiberglass doesn't allow you to push off anymore than straight pole vaulting?? crazy

Think of it this way ... the reason why the WR increased so much with the advent of fiberglass is becuz you could grip so much higher ... and without a sudden shock on takeoff ... not becuz of bigger pushoffs. The pushoffs (we called them handstands back in the day) of steel and bamboo vaulters is well-documented ... nothing new.

So think of a steel vaulter as someone gripping where a fiberglass vaulter grips on the CHORD of the pole. By that I mean that if you could replace the imaginary chord of the pole with a real pole ... that doesn't bend ... then the grips of the 2 vaulters would be somewhat equal. That's the theory, anyway.

Also, note the free takeoff ... and note the bend in the STEEL pole!
