I agree the history of pole vault in every aspect is very interesting to me, but it is hard to find. I have searched the local libraries and the net is the only thing with some info. A History book or website would be great.

i know this thread has been dead for awhile, but rather than start a new thread for me question, i'll just ask it here...

any one know of a place i could find info about WOMEN'S pole vault history? that thesis you sent me russ was excellent, but it was kinda written before women's vault came about...lol

the first womens vaulting pole

Hello in 1980 when I owned FiberSport Inc. KCMO Irene Speaker contacted me from Blacksburg VA. and asked if I could get her a vaulting pole. I was amazed that a woman was vaulting. She said there was an unofficial women PV at the Mason Dixon indoor meet ever year. That is where you can find the roots.

We made a special pole that would conform to a women’s style, as their center of gravity is lower in the hips as appose to a male whose center of mass is in the stomach area. Thus the first pole was invented made produced for women the Fibersport Featherlite. She jumped the unofficial World record from 8’3â€Â

I think I put the label on that pole in your garage in 1980. haha
twice! had a few wrinkles in it the first time.

Okay, so here it is over 4 years later, and we are nearly finished. Jan and I have been working furiously (well we never actual got mad at each other...it has actually been a terrific collaboration) and we have completed the book. It is 293 pages, with about 60 + pages being lists, tables, and indexes. We count over 800 pictures and illustrations.

Our next step is to get the thing to the printers and get it ready for Reno. It looks as though our price will be $40.
