If you have ever tried to use an electric fence as a tens unit.

If your attempt to draw attention to your state championship involved a climb up the water tower with a bucket of paint.

If you are always the one they pick to dangle upside down from the top of the overpass to express in spray-paint exactly how you feel about the university of Texas.

If your pole flexing machine consists of two sixteen penny nails and a bucket.

If you have ever tried to change a pole's carry weight with two corks and a helium pump.

If your water bottle is made of galvanized tin.

If you have ever tried to pole vault in insulated coveralls.

If one of the most embarrassing moments of your life was a totally accidental but still horrible misunderstanding about the use of a bidet in a five star hotel in Oslo.

If your coach's smoking habit and insistence on using gasoline to clean your poles cost him his eyebrows and beard.

You know, I was doing a similar drill this summer at the beach, into the shall water between the intercoastal waterway and the ocean.
That is, until I saw something swimming in the water that was 3-4ft long, grey, smooth, and not swimming like a fish...last time I did THAT in the water that day!

If your grandpa was arrested at the conference meet for crushing a car in the parking-lot with the tractor.

If that is how your mom figured out that there was more than one set of keys she needed to take away from him.

If at the next home meet he showed up on the lawnmower, which meant hiding all the scewdrivers as well.

If you don't count your steps because after 10 the figurin' gets real hard.

If your school color is camouflage.

If your coach cancels practice for the first day of hunting season.

Rick Baggett once told me that vaulting in the backyard was one of the best things a beginner could do. Once it starts to hurt you need to move to a pit...

I think this was fairly common practice once upon a time... its kinda an advanced version of grass and sand pit vaulting and I unofficially approve.

We once had a young man take a pole home to work-out. He tried to vault up on to his roof. He missed and ran into the wall of the house. He had scratches all over his face. I would have loved to have seen his vault.

I think that allowing one to learn respect for both gravity and the ground is always a good first lesson.
