Speed Trap Device

When we were at Bell Athletics, we saw a nifty device for measuring speed over a short distance. It was an IR beam speed trap attached to a timer, that turned the stop watch on/off when the beam was broken.

Anyone know where a similar device can be found or how to put the components together? I've looked on the internet and at track & field internet catalogue sites for the device and haven't located the same one. I've found really expensive alternatives, but I would like to find something for around $100. It can't be that expensive of technology.

I built one 6 years ago - but I don't think you can do it for $100.
You need 4 sensors- 2 transmitters and 2 recievers -these are about $70 each to get something that has a fast response time. A timer is about $40 and you have to build a solid state logic circuit that tells the timer to turn on or turn off when the sensors give a pulse. Add in cable, connectors, batteries ,boxes to package each unit in for another $50
